Toyota Refuses to Lay Off Workers

Toyota refuses to lay off the 4,500 workers idled for three months by halted production of the company's Tundra pickups and Sequoia SUVs at plants in Texas and Indiana.

From Workforce Management:

As the U.S. auto industry sheds workers, and even Nissan offers buyouts, Toyota is sticking by its proud—and expensive—tradition of no layoffs during hard times.

"This was the first chance we've really had to live out our values," says Latondra Newton, general manager of Toyota's Team Member Development Center in Erlanger, Ky. "We're not just keeping people on the payroll because we're nice. At the end of all this, our hope is that we'll end up with a more skilled North American workforce."...

It's an expensive proposition. Toyota won't estimate the financial hit. But keeping 4,500 of its workers on the clock at full pay and benefits for 14 weeks, even at a conservative estimate of $20 an hour, would represent at least $50 million. The shutdown also means a production loss of 30,000 to 40,000 big-ticket pickups and SUVs. At an estimated wholesale value of even $25,000 per vehicle, that translates into as much as $1 billion in lost revenue.

Toyota sets the example

Billy G from Texas, your grammar reflects your backwoods mentality. Toyota is the most above board company out there. I have a loan through Toyota and was given an unbelievable rate due to my good credit so I have nothing but nice things to say about them, besides my car is running flawlessly. You my friend, probably have a Dodge Ram built in Mexico which is a total p.o.s.

Toyota Fools Allot of Consumers

Toyota has allot of hidden agendas, however since toyota feels they make some of the best cars(auto) they can't be touch. They do more legally deception practices than any auto manufacturers, they are known to give two high interest loans in family, husband and wife, or 1 person with two cars , which is unlawfully in some states. (like Texas)

Toyota is also known to place refund money on some buyers monthly payment, without consulting the buyers telling new or uneducated buyers, they do not have to pay on their loan for several months, while Toyota collects back interest. (they will send consumers/buyers an invoice which states 0 due this month. While collecting interest.

Just because Toyota has the first Japanese bank, doesn't mean they shouldn't be held accountable. Toyota has too much freedom.

uaw

the only reason that toyota treats their workers halfway decent is to keep the union out. in fact since the white house now embraces unions toyota is now being much nicer. at least the line workers are benefitting from my union dues, they do pay it back when they spend their money in the USA. Anyone who has the ability to reason should know, if a non-union company treats you well, it is to keep the unions out. If the threat of unionization dissappears then so does sweet pay and benefits.
