Do Brokers Deserve Their Fat Commissions?

Back to blog

What kind of information is this?

Alex - I've had 25+ years experience in real estate. It's slightly appalling that your calculations are so far off with regard to the $250,000 sale/$15,000 commission. Are the "fat commissions" in your title based on the same flaws in calculating an average commission?

This is strange.

Going through this right now...

Our home is for sale right now. So far our realtors are great - it remains to be seen if I will feel they have earned their commission. Ask me when/if my house is sold! However, having just signed a contract with our realtor, I would like to point out an error in your calculations - you imply that a single realtor pockets a 15K commission on a 250k sale. Generally, that commission is split between the buyer's agent and the listing agent. Each of those agents must then give about half to their brokerage. Therefore, the net for a single agent is actually $3750 - out of which he/she will have to pay their advertising costs, etc if he is the listing agent. I can tell you that I resented the commission a lot less once I saw how it was broken down and just what our realtors expect to earn on the sale of our home!

AGENTS WORK VERY HARD

I am an administrator at a real estate office. I have been in my position a number of years. I have seen alot that goes on with realtors and their customers be it on either side and I must tell you that they work very hard for for their commission. I have seen realtors clean up houses, wash windows, pick up dirty laundry not to mention getting phone calls at all different hours of the day or night. I have seen customers make appointments and cancel just before having to meet up with the realtor (very rude) Realtors are human beings and deserve to be respected and yes they deserve a decent commission check for all their hard work.
