We've done most of what is being suggested here and it works! We always have a budget in place and review it regularly to make changes as required. Absolutely you have to pay off your mortgage before retirement. We paid ahead for years and bought it down considerable. Then we sold the house and purchased our retirement house outright. If you are willing to move a bit, you can find some great deals on placed to retire.
