Forced Retirement

I was office manager for a busy physician's office owned by a Hospital in Santa Barbara CA. The neighboring doctor wanted to take over our office for his expansion and was allowed to do so. I am out of a job! I heard this upsetting news on the same day the stock market dropped 900 points! All of my IRA and stocks dropped by an alarming amount and that was my nest egg for retirement. I cannot sell anything. In seeking new employment, I have discovered age discrimination all over the place! I am a widow, a young 73 years old, totally healthy, honest, hard working and dependable with leadership ability and years of experience, all valuable assets these days. I have a perfect score on my bi-annual evaluations for the entire time I have been employed, 8 1/2 years. Our family has always taught that it was a disgrace to be "on the dole". My social security pays $514 dollars per month. What am I to do!! I am trying to "sing a happy song" I am not a "whiner" I just need a chance to support myself, again.!

the best things in life have always been free, unfortunatley everyone is trying to keep up with the joneses, look around and appreciate your family, friends and the things God gave us, keep looking for a rainbow, it may happen!!!

Selling my home of which i also had 3 apartments

I just sold my home that i lived in for 28 years, every year i would upgrade my three apartments of which were all part of my dutch colonial style home. from the sale i netted $60,000. of which i felt would enough for me at 71 to be able to live comfortable in an apartments with a rent of $895.00 a month. I informed my tax man of the sale and he said i would have to pay $18,000.00 for capitol gains, not that leaves me $42,000 to last me till i kick the bucket. Of all the years i owned the home i never had a profit as i kept putting my funds into the home and apartments. What really upsets me is that i an reading a book titled "FREE LUNCH" this book tells about all the subsidies the rich get and get large handouts from the Government so they get a free ride. Here i am retired and no handouts to me from the Government while the rich get richer, is that a fair deal?

How do i find handouts so i get by on my only final asset of which is my savings earning 2.66% at a savings bank. There must be some way to help me, I worked 41 years in finance and did not learn how to steal as the rich practice!

I am 91 years old and survived the depression by working part time and going to college on my earnings. We lived in house that was paid for and my dad was on WPA, a brother in CCC I had NYA help in college. One of my sisters had a job in a firm and another sister worked by clean ing houses. That is how we survived. I had three brothers and two sisters. After college I enlisted in the air force for four and one half years and wound up as a Navigator on a B 24 bomber for 50 missions.I am the surviving member of the family.

retirement on less

Everyone doesn't make enough to have deuctions to take.

How about now and then articles on how they make it with less and even save.

Stop sounding like cry babies. Do your part to not be overspending.

song for our times

How about "ON the Sunny Side of the Street?"

Grab your hat and get your coat,

Leave your worries on the doorstep,

Just direct your feet

To the Sunny Side of the Street.

Some other things you can do. Hold hands (a lot) with someone you love.

While not blaming others, don't blame yourself either. We all (now) know we should have sold everything last year.

Also, plan now to understand why you will not again be lured into the next bubble.
