Gallup: Majority Of Americans Support Employee Free Choice Act

Rephrase your questions

If you believe that you really are not very intelligent. Ask the right question and you will get the right answer.

Don't ask people if they are for FREE CHOICE. . . this isn't about FREE CHOICE. . . it's about easier UNIONIZATION and getting UNION DUES.

Ask them if they are for GIVING UP THEIR RIGHTS TO A SECRET BALLOT ELECTION to determine if as a group they want to be Unionized. . .

Ask that question to the same audience.

To Rick

You need to get a life. Get a better job if you feel beaten down. Or, better yet, try running a business to see what it's like to meet payroll.

Article needs to be changed

The question posed by Gallup did not have to do with EFCA specifically. Thus, the headline is wrong. More accurate would be "53% of Americans think joining a union, in general, should be easier to do."

Finally, the same poll indicated that the slim minority (less than 15%) who had familiarity with specific EFCA act were over 60% against it. Thus the right headline would be "Americans support the idea of unions, but think the EFCA is the wrong way to accomplish that goal."

who opposes this?

I'll tell who opposes the EFCA legislation. THE ONES WHO HAVE THE MOST TO LOSE! THOSE WHO HAVE BEATEN DOWN THE AMERICAN WORKER TO THE POINT THAT THEY NEED UNIONS. I believe this poll to be true. I really think that if more Americans were more informed about the EFCA that you would see even higher support for it. Why would anybody who works vote against having more rights and benefits? Don't be brainwashed by the negative campaign against this issue. By the people pretending to know what is good for you. USE YOUR OWN HEAD.

This article is simply wrong and should be removed or corrected

The Gallup Poll supports that a majority, 53% of americans supported that "In general, should make joining a labor union easier." Had the question been "Should the EFCA be passed, which includes a provision to eliminate the rights of workers to insist upon secret ballot elections" the results would have been different.

Also, Republicans were against the idea by 60% (not for it) in rank incompetence by USNWR. Democrats were for it by 70%.

The survey also noted that less than 15% of respondents were knowledgeable about the specific provisions of the EFCA (like the removal of the secret ballot). Those who were called themselves knowledgeable about the EFCA provisions were over 60% against the act.

But the crime here is the misleading headline. The Gallup poll did not suggest that public opinion is behind the EFCA.

Secret Ballot a Proven Method

I'm for the right for workers to unionize. I'm also in favor of the bill's provisions to strenghten punishment for firms that infringe on the right of workers to form/join unions.

But the secret ballot is a proven method that is, more or less, central to our system of government. I'm a bit stunned that it isn't considered good enough for use to decide a unionization issue.

I think the public support for this bill is based on the public's support for unions and a lack of knowledge about the bill's card check provision.

I think if people understood the card check provision, support for the bill would fall substantially.

EFCA NOW!!

Now is the time we need the EFCA more than ever. We have seen the insane profits posted by companies while wages have stagnated for workers. Workers who want to organize are undoubtedly on an uneven playing field fighting to join the middle-class.

It is the greed of big business wanting to horde all the money to the top that has had a HUGE impact in crashing our economy not the working men and women who just want to create a middle-class.

It is just common sense that more people with more money in their pocket will help the economy by allowing more people to have disposable income to spread instead of just making ends meet. The corporate fatcats want to keep the status-quo because they love having all the money and power while the rest of us suffer.

Don't be fooled by their greed, demand the EFCA from your Reps and Senators now!!

Human Right

Forming a labour union is a human right recognized by the United Nations under the UNDHR. Trying to stop a union from forming is therefore a suppression of Human Rights. Companies that pride themselves in being union free, and persecute anyone who believes in unions, by trying to identify union sympathizers, deny promotions to union minded workers or create a poison atmosphere for union minded workers are wide open to class action lawsuits by those persecuted.

The choice belongs to the worker as he or she is the one whose associational rights are at stake. If workers have the right to have a union, the employer does not have the right to not have one if the employees choose so.

Larry below

has articulated precisely the Republican position that you citizens exist for the profitability and convenience of your employers. He gives you that Chamber of Commerce B.S. line that says the poor employers are trying to earn a profit so they can employ people.

THE REVERSE IS ACTUALLY TRUE. They are employing people so they can actually earn a profit to keep. Businesses that are profitable DO NOT ADD EVEN ONE PERSON THEY DO NOT NEED----EVER.

You, the citizens, are a "business" too. You sell your labor to earn a profit on it. You have the power here with Obama and a Dem Congress to strengthen your position in that effort---and with the economy headed down, you'd better get this done while you can. It's YOUR government now, not "theirs" as it would be, say, with John Veto McCain as president. Tarry not. These conditions have not existed for decades. If we waste them now, we're dumb bunnies.
