How Do I Weigh the Decision to Get a Business Degree?

Back to blog

@kala

It all comes down to what is the job you want post MBA and how can your local school help you get it.

Siddharth - congrats!

I'm looking into an MBA degree myself (did a BA a few years earlier and have worked in the family business of commercial real estate since). How did you manage to get into a top ten program?

that aside..i can understand where you're coming from in terms of the debt load post grad. where do you think you're heading towards with the MBA? Finance? Manufacturing? Are you still undecided and want to see what's out there during the first year?

"Local" MBA Degree

Kala,

I too live in Kansas City! I am starting to look into the various programs...we have so many (Rockhurst, UMKC, the KU Edwards campus in Overland Park, Avila, Webster, Park, the list goes on). While not a top ten school I would look heavily at Rockhurst, UMKC, and KU as they are AACSB Accredited programs. Since MBA's are becoming a dime a dozen it may help to have an MBA that is highly accredited over one which is not AACSB accredited. If you want to stay and work in KC when you're done, think about what future employers you may want to target and what schools their execs have attended. I am still undecided as to which area program to attend, but you can bet your bottom dollar that cost is going to play an important roll!

Im thinking about an MBA with emphasis in finance

I don't know what school to attend. I wanted to attend one of the top ten schools, but I don't have that kind of money and I am already paying off a student loan for my undergraduate degree in business administration. I live in Kansas City, MO and none of the schools close by are ranged in the top ten of any of the programs I have considered. Would it be smarter just to get my degree from Rockhurst or UMKC than deal with the moving expense of relocating and the higher cost of ivy league education. Help! Oh, I am also sharing custody of my ten year old daughter.

Equating education with $$$$

Brilliant post Tim.

However, I do think that the cost of the MBA/education should play a role in one's decision. After all, all this for what? To ensure that you have a safe and sound future, are able to do what you wanted to do. Learning, knowledge, education are great but do they supersede financial freedom? I doubt so.

This fall I have decided to join a lesser known MBA program for want of financial freedom and declined one from a top 10 university. I believe that the dollar equivalent I would end up in saving through the scholarships, assistantships would give me the much needed freedom post MBA than I would have had, had i graduated with a huge debt.

Your thoughts?

How do you decide between two high level programs

Both NYU and University of Michigan have accepted me into their programs. I have done a lot of homework but I am still up in the air ove best fit. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Economy

In this economy, do you think it would be wise to leave my stable job and pursue an MBA? My cuurent salary is shy of 6 figures and I while I really want to attend B-School for the networking and the knowledge, I'm afraid that two years out of the work place and a major debt load would cripple me. Please advise!

Thanks,

Erika

Against all oppositions.

Hi Tim

I am pleased to have come across your posting at the beginning of its release. A few years ago I decided to return to college with the grand finale of being admitted to grad school and earning a MBA. I was 47 years old, and single when I decided on my new goals. I was astonished at the negative responses I received once I made the announcement. One of my friends even stated that “I was too old to return to school”, and to top that, the person I had been dating for almost two years disliked the idea so much the relationship ended.

I could not understand such an opposing response. I thought it to be such a wonderful fortuity or in your words “a luxury” that I could not pass up. Now I am about to graduate with a B.S International Trade and Marketing with an Asia Minor. My previous college (20 + years ago) was general business, heavy on accounting and a side track of computer programming. My current GPA is 3.7, very close to MCL status. I will have to wait for this last semester to see the final results. I so want to be a Magna Cum Laude recipient.

I was asked why I wanted to return back to school and why a MBA? Truthfully I must admit it is all for selfish reasons. I want to prove it to myself that I can achieve what many people just dream about, and I want to achieve it with honors. It is that simple to me. It has nothing to do landing a prestigious job afterwards. I should say I will need a good job afterwards to pay off my student loans, but I will worry about that once I have my MBA. And before that is my GMAT!

I am studying for the GMAT at this time, and plan to be admitted to the college I have picked for Fall-2010. I so confident, that I will move to that state a year in advance to take advantage of not paying out of state tuition.

I look forward to reading your articles, and I will post from time to time.

Cheers

Malc
