Dear Former Employee: It's Not Your Fault

Back to blog

Brilliant. Affirm the ex-employee's dignity and worth, and you've truly helped

As one who's had to lay off employees and contractors, albeit due to no fault of the company or my colleagues, you've put your finger on the most important message an ex-boss can impart: it's not your fault, it's okay to be hurt and angry, you're worthy, and I believe in you.

It's the ultimate validator at a time when one doubts one's relevance, ability, and prospects. It take a huge amount of courage, too, which is probably why most RIF casualties will never see such a message (at least in writing).

Kudos to a boss with the guts, compassion, and wisdom to help his ex-employees pick themselves up and move on like this. I'd follow such a leader anywhere.
