What to Do if You Think You’re About to Get Fired

I Suspect I'm About To Get Fired

My manager said we were having our weekly one-on-one but didn't let me know that HR was going to be there...surprise!! I thought something was up when she scheduled 1 hr rather than the usual 30 minutes. She wasn't pleased with my performance and even went back to 2008 dates. I have been on intermittent FMLA for the past year until ending March 2010 for medical reasons as it has been an emotional drain to go into that particular job every day in addition to the medical part. She has given me a written warning and if I don't improve in 30 days, 'further disciplinary action may be taken' which could include termination. (thought they couldn't do that while on FMLA???) She decides to tell me this while my husband has been in the hospital for the last 4 weeks and won't be well enough to come home for Thanksgiving. But....she was very 'apologetic' that this must come at a difficult time for you and your family. Thanks for the insensitivity! I am not fearful as much as I dislike having to play a roll by smiling and pretending I like my job...or even her when I don't like either!! I think they are looking at getting me out before the year is out.

There was a reorganization and they took me out of the supervisory position that I loved and laterally moved me in an area which has given me the most resistance and headache. Some say they had it already in their minds to set me up to fail. *The 3rd month I was there, I was told what a terrible job I was doing. I am tired of having to defend myself all the time with anything I do! I am told it is better to be fired than resign for unemployment....is that true? This was a very good article. I will be checking back on your updates! Thank you for 'listening'. :)

Expressing frustration with an assignment

is probably going to lose me my job today because I got tired of working on a document that shouldn't have been my responsibility and my boss has been using that assignment as a way to chip away at me, sending it back for corrections even SHE missed the first three or four times and making up new ones that really aren't needed. Because HER boss is not as worried about this and wants me to focus on other priorities, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place if I make EITHER side a priority. Someone always criticizes!

I've only been working at the company eight weeks and while they interviewed me for one position, they apparently hired me for another, less senior, position. They're low on money but won't let me take on a toolset until we have another person on the department. So basically I'm being prevented from doing the most important aspect of my job.

It could have been a good opportunity; if she had trusted me to do my job (and given me a little time to get up to speed, which should be a given on a project like this) I'm sure I could have done a solid job for them. Great coworkers too, for the most part.

Never ask your boss for more direction on the job. Not only will she think you're incompetent, she'll take it to heart and micromanage you right out of it.

I think that I am going to get fired

I think that I am going to get fired because I went to HR and told on an employee, ever since then I have been called into the office for little things and written up for things that the other employee does and does not get written up on.I even had overtime taken off of my check. I am at a loss of what to do.

I am afraid at work because it is never good when I get called into the office.

Boss Ego Issue Virtually Never Enters Into It

This is a mentioned fact, but there are actually very few company bosses with egos.

Any ego problem that's present is overwhelmingly likely to be due to the excessive ego of the subordinate.

That's why the boss ego wasn't even mentioned.

Really.

Most likely gonna get fired

a company like walmart has policies instated that will not allow you to simply back up and reason with your bosses, I expect that they will fire me.. I was just wondering what I could do to prepare for it, so that it would cause as little a blow as possible.. I'll look elswhere I guess..

Pay Raise?

I would like to know how to handle a issue at my job?

I have not had a raise in 3 years? I do my job . no complaints about but, every single year i do not get a raise, and is it worth to tell the store manager? or is it a waste of time?

Unconditonally

I have worked in road construction. When i was working: I tried to do the best job that i possibly could but sometimes my boss made fun of me and during safety meetings he would make a point to make fun of the way that i would do my time sheets. He would also purposely put me in situations that i would have to get my self out. I think that people are replaceable but, some people hold such gifts that there gifts are irreplaceable and Large Coporations can make huge mistakes just like employees can.I; in my situation no matter what education i held and no matter how good i looked; my bosses attitude would have been the same. He couldn't get past the jealousy to see just what gifted person he held however, remember people can change and come to their senses so be open to the time that your boss may come and ask you back if this occurs then you both win; provided you want to go back.

Sincerely,

Ms. Mary Sniadecki

Well Grounded Advice

I work with someone who was in a situation close to being fired this past spring. I'm glad that you mention the employee's ego because this woman had a huge ego. In her mind, she was the best employee who could do no wrong. For the rest of us, we cringed anytime she would even come near. She was verbally abusive to other employees and about the supervisor behind his back. Her opinions did have an effect on her performance, despite the fact that she felt she had things under control.

One week a couple of us noticed that this woman's job, or one that had her job's description, was being advertised on the company's website. One of the other employees assumed the woman in question had given her notice and asked her if she had finally decided to move on. None of us felt this woman actually wanted to keep working at our company because everything we ever heard from her was bad. Much to our surprise, the woman did not give her notice, but it was her job being advertised.

Ultimately, the woman in question had a talk with our supervisor about the situation. For now, she has somewhat changed her behavior and work ethic, but I do not feel as though she took the experience to heart. She still has a negative attitude behind the supervisor's back, so we know it is only a matter of time before she either leaves willingly or is fired. At least it has bought her some time to figure out what she should do next.

My take is that even if an employee is hard to replace and possesses specific knowledge, there is only so much an employer is willing to deal with. If an employee has a terrible work ethic and demonstrates that they do not want to work there through actions and speech, an employer would rather go through the difficult hunt for a replacement than to put up with a terrible working situation. No employee is irreplaceable.
