The Crucial Job Interview Meet and Greet

From time to time, someone will bring a job candidate by my office. I am supposed to do the typical meet-and-greet deal, which I dutifully do. 

I have rarely met a job candidate that handled this situation gracefully. I generally get a "nice to meet you" mumble, mumble, mumble a la Ozzie Osbourne.

These chance meetings are CRUCIAL for a job candidate. Yet, most fail due to lack of planning. Or they believe the job interview is over-and are trying their best to get out the door and have no time to be nice to some random person they just met.

At our company, we also make sure all candidates meet some of their future coworkers. We see how they interact with our current staff. One does NOT need to be a hiring guru to pick out the best candidates by just observing them as they walk around and meet people. 

Realize that the interview is not over until you are out of sight. This does not mean you have to develop an oversize personality overnight and become Mr. or Ms. Extrovert, but know that how you interact with others has become more important than ever.

If this type of situation makes you uncomfortable...realize you are not alone. It is entirely legal to practice what you might say, even in casual conversation, in front of your spouse, loved one, or mirror.

2ND INTERVIEW WITH COMPANY CHAIRMAN?

I was interviewed by the HR Manager of a car company a week ago. At the end of the interview, the HR manager promised that she will call me next week for a second interview.

The car company called me for a second interview but the chairman & managing director of the company will do the interview.

Please advise:

1. Why the company chairman wants to interview me? Does the HR manager cannot decide or HR manager don't have authority to hire.

2. What to expect during the interview with the company chairman?

The article makes a good point about career seekers not assuming the interview is over in "chance meetings" with employees and managers. However, it also important for the interviewee to understand the opportunity in this. By continuing to apply the "interview questions to ask the employer" technique, the job seeker can gain valuable insight about the culture, business practices or stability of the employer. Since the job interview process is controlled and choreographed by the interviewer these chance interview encounters may unearth valuable and critical information in helping the job seeker make a more informed decision about whether the job is right for her.

For example, the career seeker asks the interviewer about the financial stability of the company and the interviewer represents it as being stable and profitable. Then on the way out the business the interviewee is introduced to an employee in accounting. The interviewer is called away for a few minutes to answer a phone call. The interviewee asks the employee some of the same financial questions about the company and the employee quips, "We expect a big infusion of cash after the merger with XYZ that's coming up."

Hmmm...since nothing about a merger that could affect the interviewee should she be offered and accept employment was disclosed in the "formal" interview this revelation would certainly be worth knowing. The job interview process is always a "two-way street" for both employer and career seeker. "Chance meetings" are an opportunity for both sides to determine who is the "best candidate" for the employer and who is the "best employer" for the candidate.
