Is Your Boss Superhuman?

By Karen Burns

Maybe you've had one. A boss who's a likable, funny, generous, and all-around lovely human, but who is...a terrible boss. Unreliable. Inconsistent. Disorganized. In short, a nightmare.

The qualities that make people charming and fun are not the same qualities that make them good bosses. In fact, it's a lot harder to be a good boss than to be a nice person. Why? Because a good boss is a predictable, sane, and organized human being who can handle power with grace and humility.

That ain't just human. That's superhuman.

More ways that good bosses are superhuman:

That's a lot to ask of a human. But we ask it of a boss. So if you have one who does most of these things, most of the time, count yourself lucky.

Good bosses are daring

I think another quality of a good boss is one who knows a good idea when he or she sees one and isn't afraid to go out on a limb to support it. There's nothing quite as infectious as working for someone who gets a thrill out of their work and is willing to take a chance every now and then.

It's lonely at the top

I do feel that the boss should be the one with "big shoulders."

He makes sure you know about your mistake, and helps you correct it so that you don't repeat it. He holds you responsible for it. Definitely!

But to the outside world, he takes the blame on himself. The buck stops with him.

Or her, as the case may be.
