10 Ways You'll Erode Trust

A recent betrayal

I was recently lied on by a woman that I thought was a good working member of our management team and was my friend. The betrayal by this woman has shaken me to the core. I am unable to speak and it is only now that I feel able to write about all of this. As I try to pick apart the wreckage, I know I am at fault to a degree as it is not good to build friendships at work. That will never happen again. The things that pain me most was how swift and surgical she was in her betrayal....how patiently she waited to blindside me....and oddly how quick she was to pick up and carry on business as if nothing had happened. My boss recognizes exactly what happened and after he gave me a disciplinary action he told me "you can't let this get you down! you are better than them..we all make mistakes". Nothing he said was soothing or comforting in the least...I continue to struggle with the fact that a lie was told and sold with out hesitation or any investigation. I appealed the disciplinary action...will keep you all up dated

Trust is Crucial

Toby,

I think that all of us have failed at some of these. I can only imagine what it would be like to have a boss who failed at all of them.

Competence and integrity are important components of trust. That's why it is such an important element of effective leadership.

An Unbelievable Mirror

I have to say that this list nails my sentiments, EXACTLY! Unfortunately, there have been times when I have failed at some of these things. That's a big learning lesson and mostly a humbling experience. How we pick ourselves up and move on and do our best to change our ways is key to developing as people first, then as good business people after that.

Even more unfortunate is that I have had a previous boss that NAILED every single one of these. Lost trust all around was a huge factor. To be a good manager, it is absolutely a requirement for a manager to trust and to be trusted. Without trust, anyone who does not expect massive failure is probably living in their own little quixotic fantasy world!
