The Festival de Cannes today released the names of the 20 films competing for the coveted Palme d'Or. Among those up for the festival's marquee prize include a handful of heavyweight directors, including Quentin Tarantino, Jane Campion, Pedro Almodóvar, and Ang Lee.
Tarantino, who won the Palme d'Or for Pulp Fiction in 1994, will feature his much-anticipated World War II film Inglourious Basterds, staring Brad Pitt. Campion, who won for The Piano in 1998, will present Bright Star, a film about the poet John Keats. Almodóvar will feature Broken Embraces, starring Oscar winner Penelope Cruz in the lead role. Lee, renowned for Brokeback Mountain, has been chosen for Taking Woodstock, a film about the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969.
Although screening out of competition, Terry Gilliam's The I maginarium of Doctor Parnassus—Heath Ledger's last screen role—will be featured at this year's festival. Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law filled in to play parts of Ledger's role after Ledger died part-way through filming.
The 62nd edition of what's been considered the film industry's biggest annual fest, which takes place from May 13-24, will open with 3D Pixar animation Up; the controversial Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky will round out the event. The festival will also screen 52 feature films from 32 countries.
