He's not alone

Just to let you know that he's not the only one to try the concept. I own a very small local weekly paper in Eilat, Israel and we are also working on the blog model. I believe that it will work very well on a micro level, being profitable by targeting all local advertisers and enlarging the classified section. Our concept is slightly different, we write all the blogs ourselves, a mix of the serious and the not so serious and they will only be available in print. The online version will appear a week later. If you want to keep up, read the paper which is free.

The idea is that this is a pilot project with a goal to expand into a national network. Who knows?

A few notes

I agree that the content was sub-par in this issue, but it is their first try. Hopefully they will focus on more serious topics as they go more local.

A few corrections:

1. They do say that they will give bloggers the opportunity to earn revenue through advertisements, but no clarifying details are given on their site.

2. Not everyone has blackberries or iPhones. It is a little tactless to forget about the large number of people who own no means of getting online and must use public libraries or company computers. Still, your basic point that they are moving against the current of technology holds.
