How to Have a Green Fourth of July

Virtual travel... the ultimate green vacation

Maybe the most ultimate ecofriendly travel is to travel virtually.?Virtual tour websites such as www.360TravelGuide.com allow you to sit back and travel the world without ever leaving home. Compared to flying, Londoners visiting Cape Town will save 2.2 tonnes of CO2, whilst New Yorkers visiting Beijing will save a massive 2.7 tonnes! And no worries about flight delays or soaring holiday expenses.

Green? How about just sensible?

That we buy fireworks (from Asia) to simulate "the rockets' red glare---the bombs bursting in air" for the 4th of July----when we have wars going on with real rockets and bombs----is profoundly nuts. Always has been, even in the years we didn't have real wars going on. Thousands of children are headed to the ER again this year with burns from minor to serious---because we have a silly backyard tradition, sold to us by low-wage competitors from Asia. And yet we think this has something vaguely to do with American independence.

Beforre you have a fit, I fly the flag on the 4th. That's the point. Not the fireworks.
