Stick Inducted Into Toy Hall of Fame

Pet Rock

It was just as green of a toy as a stick, and also should get added bonus points for fact that people have been using the rock for centuries. It was even in the bible. The pet rock is just as green as the stick, only the pet rock was made as a for-profit entity.

The Stick!

In a time when high tech keeps getting faster and better, it is so fun to see a stick is just a stick! No directions required! I love when kids use their imaginations and it (the stick) can become whatever tool/instrument is needed. What about the stone, too!

Thank you for the story!

Toys

Susan: Glad to hear it!

Tom: Definitely with you on the creek - that was my favorite, growing up. Problematic, perhaps, for a museum setting - but I wish more kids were as lucky as me to have one in their backyard.

Other potential hall of fame inductees

In a time of ever-increasing complexity and alienation from nature, I applaud the induction of the stick into the toy hall of fame. Considering this induction, I'd like to recommend induction of the creek, backyard dirt pile, and the mud puddle, also. This is done in absolute seriousness as a result of how divorced from nature we are becoming at an increasing rate. It's definitely time to take stock of how we teach our young when learning about soil formation is done through a Google search or a video. A rotting log or pile of leaves makes for a much better learning forum and it's fun (not to mention the fresh air)!

Toy Hall of Fame Inductees

Maura, The leftover washing machine box is a great idea! In fact, we already inducted the cardboard box into the National Toy Hall of Fame at Strong National Museum of Play in 2005. This, after so many people told us that the cardboard box should be nominated for, as the story often goes, kids often ignore the toy in favor of the box it came in! You can see all the toys that have been nominated to the hall when you visit www.museumofplay.org. We invite everyone to visit our website and nominate the toy you feel should get into the hall next year!
