Drill, Baby, Drill: Breaking Down Sarah Palin's VP Speech

Back to blog

Palin is pandering to the oil lobby

What Sarah Palin wants us all to do: Let's breed irresponsibly, drill for oil and all go out and shoot moose.

Believe me, we will be DESPERATE for Obama or ANYBODY to heal the earth if the republicans get elected this time.

Drilling

When all is said and done we should have been drilling for the last thirty years. We need the 70 billion we are sending overseas here..

Robert manley of VA @ Sep 05, 2008 20:22:52 PM

where to drill?

Drilling will happen, the only question is will it happen in America with laws and oversight or in other countries. Anyone who really cares about the Earth would rather do the drilling here where we can watch over it.

Drill, baby, drill

The nastiness of Republican attitudes as shown during the convention is reflected in the slogan "drill, baby, drill" catching on. It not only shows mob mentality -- i.e. "Let's wreck something" - it also is in line with sneering at "community organizing" and caring about the inner city poor because it is sort of a parody of "Burn, baby, burn," a phrase associated with urban riots of the 1960s.

ANWR Oil

Geez ... Stating that increasing domestic oil production will do nothing to ease our is woes because oil is a commodity makes you go ... "What the #$@" Oil IS a commodity ... if there is a large supply of a commodity ... the price drops. If there is less ... well you know..

Implying that drilling in ANWR shouldn't proceed because it will take 10 years to develop is just plain silly.

It's like saying you shouldn't go to Hawaii for vacation because it will take awhile to get there.

Nobody suggests that ANWR is the only answer but drilling domestically is part of the solution while new technologies are developed and become commercially viable.

Drill in ANWR, drill off shore, re-enter old wells will polymer enhancement, reduce punitive legislation on drilling, support the development of Oil Sand Operations in Northern Alberta. (equivilant reserves to Saudi Arabia)

Go McCain/Palin

Money

Obama's answer for every single issue is to throw more, ALOT MORE, taxpayer money at it.

Drilling will impact supply, which will impact price. The complete solution, no. A real impact, yes.

Socialized medicine does NOT work. I have experienced government-run Healthcare and it STINKS. Long waits (months-years), poor care (people die for trivial issues), and absolutely NO innovation. Modern medicine is where it is today because of the free market system. Destroy that and healthcare worldwide will collapse.

Why does anyone think that government run healthcare will be cheaper?! IT HAS TO BE PAID FOR! If healthcare prices increase, the government will deal with it in one of 2 ways.

1. Increase taxes to cover increased cost while still providing a lesser level of service than you could get in a free market for the same cost.

2. Increase taxes and deliberately decrease level of service (Quacks and Ibuprofen) and availability of service (your appointment is in 6 months) to the point that people are left attempting to self-diagnose, self-medicate, and self-treat their illnesses.

Either way, you pay more if the actual cost of healthcare increases. It just comes in the form of taxes rather than hospital/insurance bills.

drill baby drill

I wasn't able to tell for sure just how the chant began. Did the crowd originate the chant, or were they simply saying "drill drill drill", and Rudy thought he heard the work "baby"? If the second case is true, then it cropped up on it's own, and either way, it is remarkable.

oil and gas

Palin and McCain will both be nightmarish for our gas tanks and wallets. Oil and gas companies are already making record profits and we see not a bit of relief coming from the leaders in office. It's time to focus on cutting our dependence. I found it distasteful that the RNC used drilling and creating more pollution to be selling points for their party.... Is that really what Americans want??? Not this American.

Drill Baby Drill Was Michael Steele's

Palin's speech was great and she's a formidable person, but that's not why I'm writing. The "Drill Baby Drill" chant was started by Michael Steele, who spoke before Giuliani. Giuliani was just referring to it as the crowd kept up Michael Steele's rallying cry, delivered a few minutes before.

healthcare

I come from the UK and the national healthcare system there works so much better than the privatised mess that has developed here. What most people don't seem to realise is that if the same huge amount of money that people spend each month on private healthcare was put into a national healthcare system it would make it the best in the world. Even the cheapest plan here is more expensive than every working person pays in the UK.

I also believe that this will become the biggest issue (over oil etc.) if it isn't already as more and more people become bankrupt or die because their health problems are not covered by the insurance companies.
