Walmart's green efforts

Walmart knows how to accomplish great things so I look for good things to come out of Walmart's green effort. I shop Walmart because they are trying to make a difference.

As long as businesses are at least doing something to conserve, they do not need to be penalized.

The approach should be to encourage more than regulate.

At least some of the savings to their bottom line is likely to be passed on to customers.

And that's a good thing.

Setting mandatory minimums has the effect of establishing maximums.

"So, what do you think? Is Wal-Mart being hypocritical, or are its green efforts in good faith?"

Any company that espouses green proposals are not doing for the sake of saving the Earth, but instead what it can do to help reduce inefficiencies in energy use that help its bottom line. That said, cap-and-trade proposals are arbitrary numbers chosen by outsiders to force businesses (and hence, countries) to comply to without considerations of costs and benefits of said proposals. Businesses are best suited to determine how and when they should be able to reduce their so-called "carbon footprint". Arbitrarily setting a cap and then telling businesses to meet that cap or pay a tax is a very ineffective and inefficient way of reducing greenhouse gases.
