Will 'WALL-E' Make Us Greener?

Back to blog

i don't really understand why people are having a problem with this movie and are seeing it as being "pro green propoganda." I think those people are just not familiar with the sci fi genre. Sci fi dystopian movies/books are by definition based on the extreme worst case scenarios, and have been for long before the green movement even existed. This movie simply carries on the tradition of sci fi greats like "1984" "Brave New World" "On the Beach" "Farenheight 451" "The Day the Earth Stood Still" "Alas Babylon" and about half the episodes of "Outer Limits" and "The Twilight Zone"

This movie isn't pro liberal, anti capitalist propaganda, it is a quintessential sci fi flick!

Think of it as sci-fi, folks

This conservative evangelical type loved the movie. After Josh Hurst for ChristianityToday.com called it "arguably the purest work of hard science fiction to appear on the big screen in ten or fifteen years," I had to see it--just HAD to. Worth the price, and likely one I'll buy on DVD when it's released. Wall-E touches on more than green; it touches as deeply on relationships, love, consumerism, and community as on the green issues. And then there's the simple fact that it's just a beautiful movie, probably the best interworking of music with video. This is dystopian sci-fi at its best, up there with Fahrenheit 451 in literature. Sorry I'm gushing.

A Wonderful Love Story

I'm a near 20-year veteran of the Navy and I went to see it with my

two sons and wife and I was absolutely charmed with this flick.

Maybe it is my video game years (since I was a lad), maybe it is

my wife making me watch "Hello Dolly!" and other musicals, but

whatever it was I really loved this film. Yes, it looks green, feels

anti-corporate, is probably hypocritical, but that's if you fit this

film into your world view. I was enthralled to see WALL-E fall into

love with Eve(A) and watch as his smitten feelings were accepted

and adored by her. This movie proves that love is a stronger

feeling than anything else, and I cared not a bit about any other

real or imagined agendas while watching the courtship of these

two sentient (or otherwise) kindred spirits. The fact that I CARED

about WALL-E and EVE shows that PIXAR did what few movies

can: move the human mind and spirit. So put aside your wordly

opinions for a second, put on your spats and do a dance with

that person you love and remember how true love feels--real or

binary :)

I’d like to see Pixar put its money where its mouth is and not fill thousands of Wal-Marts with millions of pounds worth of Wall-E brand toys, t-shirts, lunchboxes, toilet-paper dispensers, etc.

Wall•E not propaganda at all...

I don't see the need to bring Wall•E down by labeling it 'green'...other than the greed of USNWR to cash in on the trendy marketing campaign labeled such. 'Carbon footprint', blah blah blah nothing but a scheme to tax and a fraud at that. I didn't see the usual obnoxious 'global warming' 'green' propaganda in there at all...common sense commentary to mass consumption for consumptions sake - sure - but why not? Buy N Large and life of the lazy slobs on the ship encapsulates the mentality of the average suburban yuppie anyway so whats offensive about that? Truth hurts does it? Found it to be a wonderful movie, great story, with time honored messages which I watched with my kids - and am thinking of going back to theater again to see by myself.

Two thumbs up

I completely agree with Jimmy's post above. I just returned home from seeing WALL-E and I couldn't be more pleased with the experience. WALL-E portrayed a very strong, positive message for ALL ages (even if some chose to ignore it). This movie taught a good lesson in the same way that the classic Disney movies taught us as children. I feel that the best part of this film was how effectively it was able to incorporate such an important message while still maintaining an enjoyable, cute, and funny plot (not to mention the fact that very little dialog was required to express the message).

I went to see WALL-E with my parents and it is the only time we have ever seen an animated movie together and were able to come out with the same overall sentiment. The fact that my father actually wanted to see the film to begin with and then actually enjoyed it speaks volumes for the quality of WALL-E. I would recommend it to anyone.

Bad Idea

Thank you for the helpful review. This is one film that won't be getting five minutes of my time. It's hard to imagine a premise more biased, counter-factual, and, frankly, boring. Bad enough that a popular animated film should be used as propaganda, but anti-human Green propaganda? No thanks.

Wall-E

Blake, think of the carbon foorprints your future childen will have on this planet. Do the earth a favor and don't have any.

There is no way Blake has kids yet. Get back to us if you are lucky enough to kids one day.

"Chris, none of those were strictly anti-development films. They also didn't come out in a time when green issues were front and center."

That's not the point. Point one is that there were many movies that were pushing an anti-capitalist, apocalyptic worldview where mankind just ravaged the environment. Point two is that people watched these movies (as WALL-E) for entertainment.

Even though I feel the movie does have an overt green message, I wouldn't not have watched it in the theaters. Only two reasons are making me watch it: 1) It's a PIXAR flick and I know that I will like it and 2) I promised my son that we will watch this July 4th.

Who created WALL-E?

Ironic, no.
