5 Reasons To Shun American Cars

Back to blog

Haterz

The last two comments sounded like they came from from a bunch of rednecks from rural areas, lol. Get with the new times, American makes such Chrysler and GM are the biggest joke in the world, even South Korea can make more reliable cars (Hyunai). Ford seems to be the only American make that appears to be trending in the right direction, hopefully they'll keep that way.

I'm not about to go spend $30k on a car that is questionable with regards to reliability, I work hard for my money therefore I'm getting myself a Jap car, at least I know it won't leave me on the side of the freeway.

Redneck hater.

Conflicting statements?

I love how a statement in this article "5 Reasons to Shun American Cars" directly conflicts a statement in your related article titled "5 Reasons to Buy an American Car". In "5 Reasons to Shun American Cars" you state that "There's nothing special about the cars". However, in the article "5 Reasons to Buy an American Car", you state that "The styling [of American cars] is cool". It seems to me that this "cool styling" would be something special that sets American cars apart from imports. Just an observation.

quality is american

this stuff is rigged...all we have is fords and all we ever will have. ppl dont give american cars a chance because they arent fancy enough for their liking. they say they dont last, hey, all i know is we had a tempo, still running at 300k with a friend, we have 95 taurus, 240k with the only problem being a bad wheel brearing(easy fix for yall jap lovers who wanna hate on us), a 02 taurus with 88k going strong, a 73 f100, God knows how many miles, its still a running, and lastly a 79 f100, its still running too. the thing is I do trust Detroit, its just yall dont give them a chance and never will. i wish all yall at consumer whatever would quit nit-picking at everything american, gees this our country for God's sake. and yes, thank you for throwing away our dollars to japan. it dont matter if that toyota is made in kentucky, 80% of the money goes back to where them damn cars are from.

Bogus claims

What the hell is Ashram talking about? Warranties pay for repairs for both American and Japanese auto makers. What he is beligerently claiming is that American manufacturers "won't warrant repair"? Idiot...

Tools like Ashram spread lies and misinformation about "trust". American car owners "trust" their vehicles and the people who design and build them.

Send your dollars to Japan since you "Hate" America. That's one thing I can "Trust". Traitors.......

Points that nobody are considering: TRUST and "LEGS"

First, the bottom line of many people not buying American cars is because they simply do not trust the American automakers. In this case, it does not matter if America has caught up by improving their quality and offering appealing cars. A deeper issue is usually when a person who had bought an American car ends up having a problem with it that was not his/her fault, yet the dealers and manufacturer won't do anything to help. The owner then must pay the full cost of servicing the car out of pocket or not repair it and allow that asset to be practically worthless. Understandably, that customer will feel burned and the experience ends up being a very expensive lesson that is seldom forgotten coupled with a moral: "Fool me one, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." A customer is burned once and simply doesn't want to risk being "ripped off" again, so they seek a financially safer alternative in their next purchase: the Japanese import. Once the new experience is confirmed as safer (a problem arises, the customer takes the issue to the dealer and it is resolved, usually without question when it is confirmed as a defect and not a problem caused by the owner or, a more simple scenario, a defect never occurs and only scheduled service is performed), then the Japanese import owner has no reason to take the financial risk of buying an American car again based on prior experience.

People say that "customers should give American cars another chance." Well, before anyone criticizes those who drive Japanese, consider the aforementioned moral and then look at the stakes when a person buys a new car: they are going to spend THOUSANDS of dollars by using their own money and possibly even BORROWING ON CREDIT to pay for an asset which will depreciate a significant percentage the moment it's driven off the lot. Think about that: buying a new car, even a subcompact, is a major purchase! When you spend THAT much and put your creditworthiness on the line, you want to have confidence that you are making a WISE investment!

And now there's the issue of legs, which is movie industry speak for "word of mouth." No amount of good PR and marketing can overcome word of mouth from a trusted friend or relative. If a customer has a problem with an American car and has positive experiences with a Japanese car, this experience is going to be relayed to other potential customers and that word of mouth can render any message relayed from carmaker ads and PR totally irrelevant. If your father, son, or best friend gives you advice when you're out shopping for a new car, who would you seriously listen to: a loved one or trusted acquaintance or would you rather take advice from a spokesman on a car commercial?

What this boils down to is that the American carmakers lost the trust of a significant percentage of the market. It can be regained, but it'll take time, as in YEARS possibly even DECADES. Trust, after all, is VERY difficult to earn once you've lost it.

Hey Sorry Guys I made a typo and misspelled disgrace. Thank Bill Gates spell checker LOL!.. Please forgive typos and grammar errors it’s only important that the message gets out. I am on allot of oxycodone to kill the pain of cancer having my colon attached to my esophagus to a new stomach. I choke eating and my food leaks out my chest. A new site which will fill in over the next few days as of 8-17-09 will be http://uawcars.net Please support American Machinist and factory workers and Great Americans everywhere and propagate the site through the net. I am fighting as fast as I can in the Government to amend the law but am being ignored. I have started a grassroots group for President in yahoo groups and will be serious if we destroy 6 million old American cars. This law was not analyzed enough and is a disgrace. It may help our economy but it will make sure all old cars end up with cheap Chinese parts on them instead of Great Forged American steels etc.

Below was the other post I will also just post a short post link.

Support the People that bombed Pearl Harbor

Support the People that bombed Pearl Harbor disgrace the memory of your grandparents or great grand parent and what they fought for. Japanese hire robots pay low wages and don’t employ 100s of thousands of U.S. Citizens. Don’t be fools Buy American and insist on All-American parts and Our cars will be great again. Blog with our manufactures to make American made products great again. Bring those GM and Ford’s back to Detroit where they belong. Detroit was the cancer that killed American Industry. If we treat it and fix it our Jobs and pride will return. Henry Ford built 90 percent of the world’s economy and Detroit was the Nuclease. When America wises up and we put a stop to the hemorrhaging of jobs to China because the Republican Businesses don’t want to pay taxes we will fix our problems. If these people want to employ the slant eyes let them go live over these with them

Lies

Every time I buy American I am happy with the quality. Every time I buy Toyota, I am not.

Environmental Laggards?

-GM sells more 30mpg+ vehicles than any other manufacturer.

-The Fusion hybrid is actually slightly cheaper than all the other hybrids in its class and gets the best fuel economy.

-The Focus has as low emissions as a hybrid

-America is the biggest producer of flex fuel/alternative fuel vehicles

Nothing is special?

-America builds their cars with style. Japan has nothing special. They are boring.

-Cobalt SS beats Mazdaspeed3. Focus RS will soon beat them both. Cadillac CTS-V beats any Lexus, Acura, BMW, etc. Fusion and Malibu are better than anything in their class. And I could keep going on.

Quit getting information from Consumer Reports. They are as biased as you can get. They are not accurate and deserve no respect in the auto industry.
