Protectionism has been tried by the US on several ocasions. Each one was a disaster. Of the consequences are to seriously curtail what exports we have left. To pay higher prices for only US made goods will harm what is left of our real economy. This would translate into high inflation. You would make it even more difficult for those of us , the unemployed, on welfare and other wise disadvantaged to survive.

'Protectionism' is a dirty word.... ?

Am I a bad person because I believe in Protectionism?

I choose to protect my family, friends, neighbors, community, state, country, and this Earth. I say 'Made in the USA' will save us. We wouldn't be doing anything to harm other countries. If their economies are so strong, let them service their own people! All our manufacturing, information technology techniques, and innovation have been stolen.. to be run by wage slaves and boardmembers whose business 'innovation' comes down to:

(slash jobs) * (offshoring) + (rightsizing) / (no dividends) = (LUDICROUS F.n Bonus).

Are we going to allow all of our financial and healthcare information to be copied overseas?!? SHOULDN'T SOMEBODY write a law where that stuff stays here?

Jobs are NOT going to come back on their own, but, as DJ said, tax the living bejeepers out of those companies (hear that IBM, GE, Stanley, Whirlpool, et al.) - buy LOCAL or buy US when possible - use your dollars to vote, buy quality, don't buy worthless crap that lasts a month, and be crafty. Who was NAFTA good for but 'management' as Mexico deals with MASSIVE pollution in exchange for low paid jobs that have no benefits.

This country has no future if we wait for any help from Wall Street (that eats babies), the Corporatocracy (that bankrupts parents), and to Your Government Inc. (unless 'we the people' can scrape enough money together to hire our own lobbyists.. )

Bill Gates is going to talk tomorrow with Buffet on 'America'? That's a freakin joke - pro H1B visa guy. To say one is for free markets but allow a group of people to come into the country for the sole purpose of driving down wages is B.S.!

Raise the trade barriers! Man the hatches! Audit the Fed! Break up The Banks! Bring back creativity to our schools (music, art, etc.) and make kids to serious homework. We're going to have to do more things ourselves anyway when the peak oil forces the issue. If we don't get off the fence as a people and act - we are HOSED...

Jobs Lost.........

Well, if the government including President Obama want to make things better, instead of forking out monopoly money.........bring those jobs back to the USA. Make it non prosperous for those companies who are only worried about lining their own pockets.

Tax the living "Umph" out of those companies who have sent their industries to China, Mexico and Timbucktoo..........

But wait........thats to simple of a fix and it would most likely effect those working in Washington who hold stock in those companies.

All comments can be true

However history repeats and the market is designed to accept these problems. So really we all just have to work with the world we live in and not be blind to the truth. Self preservation does not have to mean steal from the less fortunate... And some how this nation and many others are founded on those acts. The problems grow from the principals that are broken. Guess one can fix a car, but not the man that drives it. Also how many Car company executives drive there own company's cars when they can fly?

Guess they get a bonus for that and maybe a yatch too. May be Ford and GM should start making planes and boats to catch up with the big money.
