RESPONSE TO YOUR ARTICLE

GM does not need to focus on the bottom line. What should become their top priority is customer service/quality!! Doing whats right for the customer!!! We don't need another Pinto because of a $2.00 bolt or piece that was "REALLY NOT NEEDED"!! There's more to the bottom line than the bottom line!

Another Fan of GM

Thank you HF of IN. I too am a GM fan and will continue to buy GM as long as they exist. I will never buy a Japanese car. The irony is just too much! As I am typing this, my husband is watching the movie "Pearl Harbor" on TV.

EASY TO JUDGE OTHERS

When he says they should not be able to retire after putting in 30 years it is apparent he had never worked in the auto industry or he would understand why they have such a plan. Most are hard physical jobs and after 30 years or even before many workers bodies have given out. It is easier to judge another before walking in their shoes for 30 years. I can't comment on those government jobs not having worked them other than the military of which they get retirement after 20 years.

GM bankruptcy

The basic problem Gm and government institutions have is very similar, the majority of governments (city, county, state or federal)are on the brink of bankruptcy the governments increase the taxes to avoid bankruptcy. GM overproduced vehicles which it can't sell at a profit and now wants more bailout money. It's my opinion the company should be allowed to go into bankruptcy so it can renegotiate the contracts with the unions and shed some of this burden from it's books. The single greatest mistake they made, which can only be corrected thru bankruptcy, Is the agreement to allow workers to retire with full pay and health benefit after 30 years of service.(Similar to the government jobs) This in fact means someone who starts working for them at age 18 can receive full retirement pay and health benefits at age 48 and collect them for the rest of their life. This is also true for the different government institutions at all levels. Why should the tax payers have to pay more taxes to keep multiple employees and retirees for the work being performed. Obviously every year new people retire adding more layers of retirees and employees who did or do the same job. All this happens while we have to work and invest our money hoping to have some money for retirement and with the uncertainty about the existence or disappearance of social security. Here is a novel Idea good for the auto industry and for all the layers of government: Give your employees the retirement and benefits they deserve but only after reaching full retirement age. Most people understand that if you put money for retirement you can't touch it until reaching retirement age otherwise we are penalized this should be true for all companies and should include all government employees. If they want to retire go ahead retire but you can't perceive any money or benefits 'till you reach full retirement age. This will dramatically reduce the financial burden to all this institutions and make it a more even playing field for all. It's time to change this culture of Governmental autocracy and large companies autocracy and entitlement, it will teach everyone to save their own money for retirement especially if you intend to retire early it will have to be with the money you save not on the backs of the tax payers and customers who have to work hard every day of their lives and don't expect handouts from anyone. Finally GM Ford or Chrysler should make high quality vehicles at affordable prices because we the consumers wont buy lousy workmanship. Otherwise you most disappear and let another company who cares for the consumer take your place. I hope someone in government will have the political courage to change this discrepancy and save our country from BANKRUPCY.

Always a Fan of GM

While I have been disappointed at their obvious arrogance and short-sightedness when it came to what most American buyers were looking for, I have always preferred GM cars. I agree that it has taken this sharp yank to reality for them to realize their errors. I just hope it is not too late, for if they cease to exist, I will continue buying GM until I can no longer find one.

simple math

You sell a product no one can afford, that product is useless. You buy a half million dollar house, when you only earn 30,000 a year, chances are you are going into foreclosure. 1 + 1 = 2 that is a fact. Now if nobody pick up on this yet, the key word is YOU. GM sells stuff the average person who understands MATH without a calculator, can not afford, either make a vehicle they can, or you will go out of business. Buy a house you can not afford, you will be homeless. Now these decisions were made by GM and the average American worker, they were not made by the government. So why do they think the government is responsible to rescue them from THEIR bad decisions. And lets not forget this point either. Who the hell does Pelosi, Reid, and Obama think they are spend yours and my hard earning tax dollars as if they worked for this money, that it flat out belongs to them?? This question is only for people who actually know about working. We know how many hours a week we must put in to get our paycheck. How come all of these thieves who call themselves representatives of the American people hardly work 6 months out of the year. So here is some more math. None of these politicians, not dems or rep, or our president seems to have the WORKING people, who put those tax dollars into Washington, seem to have our ( the tax payers ) concerns in the forefront of this spending spree in mind. I don't know about anyone who will read this, but I was raised that " I " am accountable for my good or BAD choices. Final message, to anyone who thinks it is the governments place to take care of everything, you will find out down the road it was a big mistake. The problem with this thinking is, all of US who know this is WRONG have to suffer and PAY.

Dependability & Rugged GM, Fat Automakers

Some GM vehicles have had quality issues others are very dependable. I have a Chevy pickup that has 215K miles with no troubles. It has been very dependable and I love and enjoy it. I also have a friend who bought a Tundra while his brother bought a GM truck. He bragged about his Tundra until he used his brothers GM truck to pull his boat. He realized that his Tundra was a pretty-boy's truck and not a real work horse like the GM. He says his next truck will be a GM and he is not pleased with the comfort factor of his Tundra either. I have rode in it and find it uncomfortable for taller people. On another note - I have been very upset that US automakers have been getting FAT and not streamlining their businesses when they were doing well. Many of GM's vehicles were gas guzzlers and they were very arogant when it came to dependability (on some models). GM and their dealers were FAT and arrogant, now they will be humble and have to work harder for what they earn. I am still a buy American person but we all need to stop the greed and build a good product for a good price. If we cannot be competitive then we just get fat and lazy. I am praying for America.......
