10 Cars That Sank Detroit

Back to blog

Where are the rest?

First of all, there are more cars than on this list that sank detroit. Here are few more people can add to that embarrassing and dismal list.

Cadillac Allante (For those of you screaming "buy American!" ,check this badge engineered montrosity out.)

Body was desgned in Italy by those that make the Ferrari -Pinafarina. I believe interior was designed by them too. Then it was shipped stateside for the engine. Parts came from many different places. With a $60,000 price tag, and conertible top that would squeak and rattle, who were they trying to fool? Another problem. This car didn't look like it cost as much as it did. Only fools bought this car at that price. GM has a lot of fools as customers

Cadillac V 8 - 6 - 4 Devilles (No explanation needed)

Chevrolet Citation

Is the Cadillac Catera on this list? If not it should be. Two words.. electrical nightmare

Pontiac Astre

Pontiac Fiero - Drive train disaster. And it was a monumental failure, cause it could have competed with the wildly popular Mazda Miata at the time

Pontiac Phoenix

Chrysler K Cars. Made with sterile boxy designs and fall apart mentality that worked for GM in the 1950's

All of the junk made by the long defunct AMC with the exception of the JEEP

Ford Mustang (some of the Ford Mustangs in late 70's , early 80's were badge engineered Pinto technology and had engines that would catch on fire. I know, cause my best buddy in high school had one that did this.

It's more than just cars....

Brandon of NV, you're correct. It's more than just cars. I don't want a radio made my Motorola, and I don't want a TV made by RCA or Philco. I want them made by Sony or Panasonic.

The cause of our (USA) manufacturing demise is unions. If the government really cared, companies would not be allowed to have factories off shore and unions would not be allowed to run amuck with their demands

Chance to Capitalize....

Dexter Yder, Detroit did have a chance to capitalize on the Hybrid market, but here's what they did.,,,,Introduced the EV1, crushed them 3 years later, and introduced the Hummer. How's that for forward thinking? Bunch of idiots

Sebring

Mustang Motorhead most people don't know what Sebring stands for. It might be big in Florida, but I beg to differ in opinion of those like you who somehow think it's as big as the Indy 500 or something. It's not, It's obscure. And even so, how is the non-descript car that Chrysler builds deserving of this namesake? They don't even explain what Sebring is in their advertising

Recent Flops

mike of OH since you want some recent flops, I'll give them to you:

Cadillac Catera (electrical nightmare)

Pontiac Solstice (Ergonomic nightmare)

Oldsmobile (fell out of favor with public

General Motors has too many flops to be taken seriously among other problems like the UAW and too much red ink

How many flops do you know of from Toyota or Honda built in the 1980's and 1990's

It's hilarious how many of you GM and Buy American advocates want people to suck up their pride and lay down their hard earned money for junk, when a person can go next door and get proven quality and reliability from Honda or Toyota. Even if GMs cars match the quality nowadays, it's too little too late. Where were they in 1976 when they should have started thinking about catching up to imports. It seems to me they can't see a pink elephant in the room when it's there larger than life. We don't just want SUVS and trucks, We want reliable smaller or midsize cars, and who has those? Honda and Toyota have those and always have.

American Cars Are Fine

If we were only making $8.00 per hour, we'd be paying $5,000.00 for cars, $20,000.00 for houses and a lot less for everything else.

When your great union extorts higher wages and benefits from companies, all prices go up, so you're effectively making the same or less.

Thank you unions. With friends like you, who needs enemies?
