Forget the Stock Market. Worry About Jobs

The H1-B's are not needed; they should be reserved for those with highly specialized skills but are being used by companies to cut costs by keeping down tech wages. Too many are used for run-of-the-mill programming jobs.

Jobs in education

Are jobs in education such as teaching, safe during this economy?

of @ Oct 10, 2008 11:33:40 AM

the H1-Bs are needed because there is a lack of qualified talent in the US. They wouldn't be bringing in foreign workers for those jobs if there were enough qualified applicants here in the states. It is a weakness in our educational and values systems. H1-Bs cost companies a lot of money. Homegrown workers would be cheaper, just companies cannot find them. Also the fact that a company sponsors the H1-B means the employee is likely to be more loyal, less prone to job hopping--so that influences employers, as well...

jobs

infrastructure in the u s is falling apart. bridges, roads public housing schools, etc. hundreds of infrstructure projects have been approved over the years but never funded, fund them now with a portion of the bail out money and in 6 months there will be a million jobs in constuction. billions in payroll and a vibrant economy based real earned income. the political mantra should be ,buy american and short sighted businesses must stop sending our jobs overseas

That's because American labors are crappy and expensive. Of course those companies want to hire the foreign labors, because they have higher skills with lower pay. Turning down H-1 B visa is not the solution, the solution is to enhance education for our own people.

To Ria Gant

Because there's a shortage of qualified people in US. Sad but true.

cash is king

1. take the bus, forget the car, got to pay to park it, got to pay to drive it, cost of insurance, license plates, gas at $4 a gallon. APC (always pay cash) N.P I. Never Pay Interest!!!!! Rule Number 3 CUT UP THE CREDIT CARDS. I knew the country was going to fall in the toilet or "tank" like the stock market when I found out that the average credit card debt was $9000 dollars. That is on top of a mortgage payment or rent, how many credit card holders live under the Brooklyn Bridge. George Steinbrenner should save the mound and Yankee Stadium so we can have public floggings of people who allowed fraudulent mortgages to be issued. A whipping is better than jail time, because it is "painful" and does wonders to help you "remember" the crime. 1 year off the sentance for each lash "taken". I know this sounds mean and "uncivilixed" but the purpose of punishment is to deter crime and maby plain old "greed". I am in favor of the "hot seat" the "rope" and the gas chamber for murder, not because it is "nice" but because it is a permanent deterrent to future crime.

Job Loss More complex Than Stock Market

Then why do we continue to have so many immigrant come to America each year and take our jobs and send money back to their home countries?

The media does not address the millions of Indians/Pakistan's who take white collar jobs in medicine, engineering, finance, nursing, information technology & the sciences. Each year more than 65,000 H1-B workers come to the US from India and other countries and take out jobs - and never leave. They stay on green cards never assimilating or becoming citizens but they do take our good paying jobs and then invest in their own countries. Furthermore millions of good paying white collar jobs are off shored each year. There is much we can do to stop this by terminating the H1-B program today.

GOOD INFO-GOOD ADVICE

Certainly this article is about jobs and there's very good information and advice within it. There are also alternatives to working for others that need to be examined as the job market becomes difficult which it appears poised to do. Consider self employment. Remember, entrepreneurs are developed, not born. www.LikeSoup.com
