Samsung Memoir

One side of the new Samsung Memoir cellphone looks much like a digital camera. With good reason, as the upcoming Memoir's camera can capture an unprecedented 8 megapixels.

The phone comes with other features that blur the line between camera and phone, including smile detection and face recognition -- capabilities that came to dedicated cameras only a few years ago. The Memoir also has five shooting modes and a bright Xenon flash. Software widgets on the phone make it easy to post photos to sharing sites such as Flickr, Kodak Gallery and Snapfish.

But no optical zoom. The 16x digital zoom is mostly worth avoiding. Digital zooms just crop into the photo, which is better done later with software. Then again, 8 megapixels offer more room for error, and the digital zoom might be useful for crops when sending photos for immediate sharing.

Optical zooms have appeared on cameraphones overseas, but I can't think of any U.S. phone with one. Seems like the next step if Samsung really wants us to leave the camera home.

The camera will be available soon from T-Mobile. No word yet on price.

Already bought it

I have already bought the Samsung Memoir on 02-25-09. I could not waiting to see what other had to say about it once it went on sale so I bought it. LOVE IT. So much so I bought it out right for $599 to speed up to purchase process. The only thing I have a negetive I have is Google Map will not install. Remeber people this is not a smartphone, just a multi tasking phone that has a great camera.

Samsung Memoir

It would be nice to hear what some of the other specs of the phone are so that if people are interested they can make a decision before getting overly excited (ex:phone of NY) about it.

The Samsung Omnia has all the features I want and the two earlier released variants (t-mobile Behold and Sprint inspire? ) were short of the mark in the specs and the features compared to the Omnia.

Surely having an 8mp camera and hi-powered flash will cost the user some minutes of battery usage.

Tmobile Memoir

Tmobile is stupid, they should release it now, why wait for another 20 days, competitor can come up with a phone similar to it and on sale right away.
