I use TeleNav GPS Navigator (mobile phone navigation) but I mount it in the same area you are suggesting. My husband thinks I'm strange but I like it much better there for the same reasons you mentioned. Plus - the bonus is that I can leave my phone there even when not using the navigation so it's good for speaker phone use or for connecting to my BT headset.
