Sprint Phone Gets Boost in Data Rates

Finally, a cellphone at true broadband speeds. Sprint says a software update for its HTC Mogul smart phone will enable the device to connect at the system's top data speeds.

Until now, cell carriers have made those fast bits available only to their wireless modems, which are used primarily in notebooks.

Mogul users should see a significant boost in download speeds, which should jump from a minimum of 400 kbps to 600 kbps. But the biggest gain is in uploads, which can be seven or 10 times as fast, to a minimum of 350 kbps.

That makes it much less painful to send all those camera videos to Grandma.
