Readers: BlackBerry Storm a Worthy Competitor to Apple iPhone

Back to blog

i wanted to like it

i really did.

ive been using a ppc 6700 for a few years and it was just about dead. My girlfrined has a 1st gen iphone. so i know what things can be like. Basically I consider my self pretty savy when it comes to smart phones and pocket pc's.

If you can use an iphone you can use a storm, the interface is very simalir. the only diffrence is the storm is sllllooooowwwww.

Ive had mine for about three weeks, loaded some programs, updated the os everytime theve let me, but seriously, my old ppc 6700 is faster.

people call, and the phone will vibrate. then nothing. it often cant figure its self out enough to let me answer calls. like i press the send button (or the onscreen answer button) and it cant do it. Then it may or may not tell me the number that just called me so i can call them back. Im not talking about recognizing the contact, i mean (000) 123 4567. like numbers i've seen for years will show up in the call log as an unavailable number because the phone is so buggy.

its sad really, its gorgeous, I think the touch screen is actually much better than the iphone, i like being able to select then click.

another example, you press the exterior lock button to unlock it, and it lags. you try and select the contacts list and it lags. you tilt the screen to type in qwerty and it lags. its kinda infuriating sometimes.

so, im going to take it back, but im going to get another one. i am hoping that it is just my specific phone, probably not, but hey, maybe.

In response to M Ballard of WA, try removing the battery and putting it back in. Then wait until the phone is fully back on. It may take a little while for it to come back up but it may help. I had this problem when I first got it but I tried this and it seemed to help. I also upgraded on the software to help with any other problems.

Good luck!

Overall

Generally speaking, I think the BB storm is not for everyone but overall a great smartphone. Not pleased with the Verizon service but I love the functionality of the storm. Very easy to navigate. Those who are used to using a blackberry or palm will find that this phone does a lot more the the iPhones. Finally a phone that I will NOT be unhappy with.

touch screen

I just bought the storm on the 31st. I seem to have screen locking problems. I have had to power it down 3 times because the screen won't repond to anything. Don't know if I have a bad phone or if this is a common problem.

Blackberry Storm

It does have some wierd issues even with the .75 update and I see a .85 update is coming sonn. Very impressed overall with this phone. I agree that there is a STRONG learning curve but tech support has done an excellent job of helping me with all of the apps..

Battery is awful. Standby is advertised as 360 hours.

I have now tried two batteries and get 36 hours standby, with no other use

I have returned it

New to Blackberry

I purchased my storm just after Thanksgiving. First week, I thought I made a mistake. Two downloaded upgrades later im was happy again. This phone tackles many issues that I have always wanted in a handheld device. Grant it, they are still working out the bugs, but with input from users they seem to be handling the problems in a timely manner. That is a company that I can deal with. I just downloaded the newest version 4.7.0.85. I can not find any problems with it so far. I have noticed Increased battery life, and the camera works great. I have no doubt that within a few months we will see many upgrades and tons of software with this phone. This phone will only get better and you will soon be able to adapt it to your needs. The iphone is also a great phone but I just like Verizon better.

My New Storm

I did my homework before I bought the BB Storm. I also test drove one first. I made sure that my phone had the first software update which fixed the bugs in the first release. I can attest that this is a great smart phone. I had a palm for many years and a Iphone for the last year. Yes, the Iphone is a good phone, but from a business perspective it does not compare to Blackberry for business use.

If you are a traditional BB user, or a new user who needs a smart phone for work, then the BB Storm is the best that I have seen so far.

Thoughts

I have had the Storm for about 3 1/2 weeks now. I have a blackberry world edition as well for work. The phone is very powerful and rich with features. The fact that it's not guarded by the "police" as mentioned above is great. I have been able to put about 3gb's worth of music and another 4gb's of movies which i ripped from my dvd collection with no problem. My biggest complaint and one that might cause me to return it is the Battery Life. It's absolutely aweful. I don't understand how RIM decides to make a phone with that large and bright of a screen and not realize that they would have to compensate for it with a larger or more powerful battery. Does anyone else feel the same way?

We love it

My 12 year old son is able to use Blackberry Storm without any problem. one of his friends, who has iphone initially did not like my son's Storm. But, the more he sees it the more he liked it and the family ended up in buying the Storm for his father's use. I love the phone and its features that iphone does not have- able to do multi-tasking which iphone lacks and a brighter and better resolution screen than the iphone. We love the phone though do not like verizon's customer service and overbilling unnecessarily.
