Digital TV Will Strand Some Viewers

About one in five TV stations won't reach all their current viewers after they turn off analog signals in February, regulators say. Those stations will go dark for at least two percent of their broadcast viewers, the FCC says.

But most stations will reach more viewers because of the stronger reach of digital broadcast, according to the agency.

Your signal may vary, though, at least judging from our experience. The agency's new market-by-market maps suggest our house should be getting an extra PBS station from across the river in Illinois. Hasn't happened so far. Maybe if we get a different antenna, or point it differently.

At least we are getting all the full-power stations that we did in analog. So we aren't among the unfortunate few who will be stranded without some of their favorite TV. The risk is why broadcast viewers need to allow time for fiddling with their digital system, including antennas, before the February switch.

Digital Boondoggle

Same situation as other comments!!! The networks aren't telling the whole story, and that's stupid on their part. Viewership is revenue and it will fall when us outliers can't get TV. The cable systems and satellite industry are gonna make a bundle. It "ain't" right and the little guy is once again the loser.

We Lose All Our Stations

Almost everything moves to UHF for digital, and that does not make it through the trees.

We had a big roof antenna and an amplifier and there were still no signals even close to being strong enough.

If you don't lose your station it may also turn frustratingly intermitent

I have a rural lake home and just hooked up my boxes. I used to get 5 stations (varying amounts of "snow"). I now get 2 strong PBS stations (new) and all the others are frustratingly intermittent. They work sometimes and then just cut out completely with a "low signal" message displayed. They may stay black for 2-5 minutes and then I get a signal again and a nice picture. Before long, they cut out again.

Frankly, give me back the "snow"!!

Are digital stations going to boost their power when the analog stations get shut off?
