321 Studios already tried this several years ago with the DVD X Copy product line, but they lost to Hollywood. Hurray to Real for Challenging the Label's monopolistic practices
I buy a Thomas DVD for my 4 year old only to see it scratched an unusable a day later. The label (I won't mention their name since they are all the same anyway) responds to my inquiry for a replacement telling me I have no recourse. So I can't legally backup my DVD and the labels won't replace the DVD if it get scratched.
So the consumer is getting kicked around by the labels and they are a monopoly for each title so they are not motivated to fix the situation. Instead, they spend big $$ lobbying to prevent solutions.
