The Google Phone Is About Open Software

By David LaGesse

Critics of the Google phone say it looks too clunky. The HTC hardware does look dated. But it's mostly the software that matters. Google mostly cares about getting its Android software on many devices.

On that point, I thought it revealing when Google cofounder Sergey Brin stood up yesterday and described the phone as a great techie toy. "It's just very exciting for me as a computer geek to...have a phone that I can play with and modify and innovate on."

The software doesn't look as chic as the iPhone's. It doesn't need to be, as John Murrell explains at Good Morning Silicon Valley:

It comes down to closed vs. open. In political terms, the Apple environment is like Singapore, where some freedoms may be ceded in favor of providing a pleasant and orderly experience, and Google, with its Android platform, is like a loud and messy New England town meeting.

I hate software that just works

To me the entire point of a piece of software is the fact that you can push it to the point of breakdown, or just barely working. Any CAS that says "we have noticed your expression has alot of compositions so we've decided not to differentiate it" is not the CAS for me. Any compiler that require me to check a bunch of boxes for optimizations, click through folders for include paths and select libraries from a box, rather than -O2 -I../include -lm is not the compiler for me. Any CPU that can't be overclocked, any wireless driver that can't be bombarded with packets in monitor mode, any browser that can't be themed to the point of looking ugly, any software that can't go that extra mile just doesn't feel like what I'm paying for... err what I'm NOT paying for :D.

iPhone - "dependable hardware"... hmm!

heath's comment about the iPhone strikes me as an odd choice of phones to use as an example of dependable hardware because, well...its not! That said I can understand peoples appreciation of its aesthetic qualities, if nothing more.

I think Google are doing a fantastic and much needed job by bring an open source project to the market, and I offer them great praise for that. Apple however...dont get me started!
