Just a thought, not sure if it'll work...

If the chip is installed in the phone, and the operating system isn't removed of all its GPS-related functionality, would you be able to re-enable the built-in GPS support, via the advanced device options screen?

If that doesn't work, but if bluetooth would work on that phone, there are bluetooth-enabled GPS 'pucks'. I picked up one, myself, before upgrading from a Treo 700wx to a far less incident-prone Blackberry 8330. That puck is a pocket-sized number by a company called G-Sat, model number BT-368i.

As far as GPS software, the stuff that comes pre-installed on a Sprint Blackberry isn't hardly worth its salt. Google Maps on the mobile would be more useful.

Even Garmin's app for the Blackberry has some issues -- relatively minor issues, as far as usability is concerned, but issues I can't help but notice, on the thing.

Compared to CoPilot 7 for the Treo, Garmin on the Blakcberry is better in ways and is worse in ways, but it looks like it would be one reliably constructed, one-time-pay option for GPS software on the Blackberry. I haven't looked into subscription-licensed GPS options, myself.

$50.00 OnCourse Bluetooth and to H_LL with Verizon

I purchased a $50.00 OnCourse Bluetooth and paired it with my 8830 and it worked like a charm. Just changed the GPS from Device GPS to Bluetooth and Blackberry maps and google maps works like a charm. Even Instamapper.com.

Sorry Verizon not going to pay you $10.00 a month to use my GPS and your stinkin navigation software.

External Blackberry (bluetooth) GPS

Yes - I've tried it and it works, but the only difficulty has been to find a decent program to run while driving with voice turn-by-turn directions. I've tried google-maps (no turn by turn voice guidance) and Nav4All. Google maps has by far the best image (which includes satellite imagery underlay with streets overlay); however, Nav4All does offer audible turn-by-turn directions, but the mapping image sucks. If we could somehow combine google-maps display with Nav4All's voice guided directions, we'd have a solid product to use on the Blackberry 8330.

verizon gps

This is a dirty trick that Verizon has pulled. I have seen them do this before with the HTC phones. They turn off the wi-fi so that you would be more likely to buy the higher end data package or go over your data use & have to pay the extra fees. Well now if I want to use MY BLACKBERRY for navigation I have to sighn up for VZNAV. Well I am fed up..... I am not going to switch carriers; I am going to find an Attorney. We will see if they can disable a class action law suite. End of story........................

GPS

Isnt this terms for a class action lawsuit. I would consider this monopolizing a free service.. why doesnt anyone consider this?

Demise of the Big Guys

Companies like Verizon eventually get their due. Just think of the large, service unfriendly companies that either don't exist anymore or are not the companies they used to be. The public builds up a disgust for their high-handed ways and when an opportunity comes along to drop them, not amount of discounting or free services will keep the customer base in the fold. Verizon is building its own demise through these actions. I can't wait for the buy-out by a customer friendly company.
