Iran Nukes: Nuclear Weapons Material This Year

Iran going nuclear? This from the International Institute for Strategic Studies:

As Iran nears the point – probably sometime in 2009 – of producing enough low enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon if it is further enriched, the question of how Iran can be stopped from having the Bomb will become increasingly urgent. ... For nearly two decades, Western strategy on the Iran nuclear issue emphasised denial of supply. Since 2002, there has also been a demand-side dimension to the strategy, aimed at changing Iran’s cost–benefit calculations through inducements and pressure. But the failure of these policies to prevent Iran from coming close to achieving a nuclear-weapons capability has promoted suggestions for fallback strategies that would grant legitimacy to uranium enrichment in Iran in exchange for intrusive inspections and constraints on the programme.

Me: The Obama White House would probably be happy at this, since it more than likely takes the military option off the table and accelerate progress toward some of "grand bargain" with Mullahocracy in Tehran. Hopefully the goal is use greater economic/political/cultural openess to change the regime from within. (Read Tom Barnett's blog for more on the "soft kill."

You can not make deals with those who want to kill you.

Iran publicly states that it wants to destroy Israel and America. Iran held our diplomats hostage for 444 days at gunpoint. They have NO honor if they would break their promises of protecting international diplomats. They lost all trust and good will if they lied about wanting nukes. We should not give them more respect just because they do get a WMD. On the contrary, we should do what a swat team would do to an escaped criminal when they endanger innocents with a weapon. Or should we try to become friends with someone who has a gun at our head??? What do you choose Obama?

misunderstanding NPT

I see from these comments that because of the misinformation by the government and media, lies continue to surround this critical issue. So here it is, Article 4 allows member nations to perform all aspects of a nuclear fuel cycle. Judging from the IAEA reports so far, Iran has not violated any NPT regulations that would have prevented it from using all aspects of a nuclear fuel cycle. Iran has been under more intrusive inspections that most EU countries. Enriching uranium is not tantamount to immediate transition to bomb making. No member country has been able to do that because of sensors and camera. If IAEA is kicked out by Iran, there will be ample time to prevent it from going all the way. it makes little sense for Iran to break out and attack a much more powerful Israel; they are suicidal as has been portrayed in the West.

sick of liberal and conserviative finger pointing

Just because something does not fall inline with your perspective does not make it liberal or vice versa. Those of you who stick "liberal this" or "conservative that" into your statements will never have anything useful to add to any civilized conversation. If all you have to add is hate and drivel, you should just let the rest of us run the world while you sit and remain an armchair politician.

@jon m - You sound like the same trash that has been dividing and dragging this country down for 40 years. KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY!
