Informative

Great article! Just the kind of information that I was looking for. I had seen some of the maps which charted the quakes in and around Yellowstone. I noticed on one particular map, it noted ~200 earthquakes in the past week - but it was difficult to see all 200 because it appeared that they were all stacked on top of each other in the north eastern corner of the lake.

keep up the updates James

Most of the media will only tell us

if Brad & Angelina are happy or

sad today. Keep up the thinking

persons news, it's fascinating and

very informative. I know many are

Soemthing to Keep In Mind

Folks,

We all grew up with STAR TREK (in one or more of its various incarnation) and other shows that have "sensors" that are fantastic.

Keep in mind that fiction allows for that. Dr. Lowenstern alluded to the fact that we do NOT have the senors of the USS ENTERPRISE and must rely on what we have. He gave very real limits on what our technologies can provide. Hence, the data must be tediously reduced by scientists (this has screwed up THEIR holiday weekend plans!) and the date we do obtain does NOT have all the accuracy/granularity/precision of fictional sensors.

For instance, my experience tells me that GPS units may not work all that well under water, so tracking the uplift in Yellowstone Lake is a difficult task. Plus, positioning them on the lake bed is not as easy as installing land-based GPS and seismic sensors. At least, IMHO.

Still, it all makes for an interesting weekend.

Darn, that tiling still beckons (procrastination, thou art a cruel mistress!!!)

'We're all going to die'

That is the one indisputable statement on this page.

hmmmmm

<<What happened to the data between 12/31 - 1/1 especially between before 10:00 MST and 13:00 MST it is missing on the Uni. of Utah seismographs.>>

Good question.

good work on the reporting

Great work on keeping us informed about the swarms in Yellowstone. The information provided by Dr. Jacob Lowenstern was very informative about the geology of the area. I kept telling my parents about the Yellowstone events the past few days and when they tried to bring up articles from the New York Times website, their most recent story about Yellowstone quakes was from 1995! Keep up the good work James.
