Obama and the Socialist 'Thing'

By James Pethokoukis

"Is Barack Obama a socialist?" is the question asked once again, this time by the liberal New Republic magazine. (Reporters asked John McCain that same question recently, and he cheekily replied, "I don't know.") It is a question I addressed some time back:

Such campaign season silliness aside, it is certainly true that Obama has chosen to pursue government solutions rather than market solutions to problems such as possible climate change, healthcare, Social Security solvency, income inequality, the trade deficit, and education. Compare those views with those of Bill Clinton, who cut capital gains taxes, pushed free trade, and floated the idea of having the government invest Social Security dough in the stock market.

Here is a great example of Obama's thinking: He wants to create something called a "Clean Technologies Venture Capital Fund" and invest $10 billion a year in emerging energy technologies. Now the private VC industry is already pouring billions into alternative energy, but Obama thinks that's not enough and wants Uncle Sam to get in on the action at taxpayer expense. Interestingly, a new study by the University of British Columbia looked at the performance of the Canadian government's venture capital efforts. It found that government venture capital isn't nearly as successful as private venture capital.

Bottom line: I continue to sum up Obama's views this way until someone shows me I'm wrong:

What is the economic philosophy of Democratic front-runner Barack Obama? I will elaborate on this later, but for now, think of it this way: He's Robert Rubin on trade (pretty much keep it open but help workers), Warren Buffett on taxes (higher rates really don't affect what rich folks do, so crank 'em up! ), and Robert Reich on spending (balance the budget later, "invest" now in education and science).

You also might want to check out this analysis of Obama's economic advisers in the Weekly Standard.

OBAMA

wow this just does not shock me at all, the stupid liberals are taking over this country and we hard workers cannot do anything about. No one has even said about anything about Barack HUSSIEN Obama getting rid of guns.

We were given the right to own guns to rebel against a government that is taking too much power.

Government running our lives

The government has been running our lives for years. Someone has to do a better job at it than this (the Bush) administration.

I see no advantage for the government to take more from the rich. Why would any one think that when you take from the rich that they will not just raise prices more , and the poor get poorer. The Gov. can control the price of a gallon of milk, but not the price of gasoline that it costs to drive to the store to buy it?

The politicians are totally out of touch. I think that we still on a down hill slide. Instead of bailing out the auto industries, MAKE them build efficient cars. Instead of talking about highly expensive changes in alternative fuels, why not talk about something big business evades. That is the use of "hydrogen on demand" that can be easily adapted to existing cars. Safe and easily can cut fuel costs by 50% ,NOW, TODAY,IMMEDIATELY. Home do it your selfers are doing it every day. www.water4gas.com just drove a VW turbo diesel across the country with a 50% increase in fuel mileage. Tens of thousands of people around the world Can do it at home. And the auto manufacturers can't ???

On another note, Government employees need to stop voting themselves pay increases and vote for a decrease. If the government wants to get the economy rolling make the powerful insurance companies lower their homeowner rates that they pushed up after a few hurricanes and have made that return many times over since then. I can go on and on about what the little guy talks about. But the Big guy and the Politicians are OUT OF TOUCH, and greed runs everything.

If you read this, thanks. If you print it, thanks a lot. If you look into this Hydrogen on Demand , you deserve a medal

Socialism works!!!

Hey stupid Republican's, Socialism works!!! it's improved the lives of people throughout this world. You just don't like it because you're greedy with the money you've been given by an economy upon which you rely on the rest of the social network to pay you!!! There is no free market, just those who are hooked up with money and those on the outside of the system. Obam,a is going to make sure everyone is allowed to have a piece of the pie. If you don't like it MOVE somewhere else!! but your so-called "private property" (just a post-Nietchain construction anyway) will be shared whether you like it or not.
