Obama: "Yes" to Higher Taxes, "Meh" to Spending Cuts

There has been a lot of chatter about Barack Obama's recent interview with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo in which he called for a near doubling of capital gains taxes. But I also thought this part was interesting, where Obama talked about possible spending cuts:

Oh, you know, there are probably some weapons programs that I think are not serving our national security interests that need to be examined, and we've got to do an audit there. There are reforms that need to be made in our purchasing processes, where—simple things, you know. If we actually made sure that every government employee had a single, you know, debit card or credit card, then negotiated with large purchasers to get the discounts that any other large purchaser would get, we could lop off 10 percent of some of our major purchases by the federal government. Our travel allowances and expenses are a major problem. We could save several billion dollars just in how we set up government travel. So there are a whole bunch of areas where we can make some significant savings.

My take: In a $3 trillion federal budget, that's it, that's all the fat—just defense and some procedural changes. How about limiting discretionary spending growth to inflation minus 1 percent or such? Oh, and on the subject of taxes, don't think Obama will wait until the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire in 2010. As this piece of political analysis from JPMorgan Chase points out:

Is it possible to repeal Bush tax cuts before 2011? Yes! The Democrats have not been able to touch the tax cuts as the Republicans have had two lines of defense. First the Republicans with 49 members of the Senate have more than enough votes to sustain a filibuster that can continue with as few as 41 Senators. Secondly, the President has the votes to sustain any veto should Congress pass a repeal of his tax cut initiatives. However, if there is a Democratic presidential victory this year, there is a way the cuts could be changed in 2009.... What if Obama or Clinton wins? Opposition to the Bush tax cuts, especially those favoring the wealthy, has been a linchpin in Democratic political rhetoric. Furthermore, both Democratic presidential candidates are committed to working with the Democratic Congress on large spending programs ranging from health insurance to infrastructure projects and education.... To fund some of these programs, I think the chances are very high that some of the revenue will come from a Reconciliation Bill that increases the top rate back to 40%, has the capital gains tax revert back to 20% and increases the current 15% rate on dividends.

Obama says what people want to hear

With a $10 TRILLION dollar US deficit, Obama can find more to cut than some defunct defense programs and simple purchasing choices! Is he serious about stopping wasteful government spending when Michelle Obama is ordering steamed lobsters and caviar at the Waldorf Astoria this past week (Rush Limbaugh talk radio)? Couldn't she have shown some frugality and ordered a burger? In addition to not cutting, he is proposing almost $300 Billion in new spending (see the National Taxpayers Union website)!! Obama is an expert at not answering direct questions, talking around issues, and saying what he expects people want to hear. He is a great orator, speaking with melody, cadence, and tone. He has good posture and studied body language. This is fine if we want to elect a stage-actor instead of the Chief Executive officer of the United States! He is against organized religion (see Obama's "Call to Renewal" address in June 2008 on www.barackobama.com)so he talks about infusing "faith" into society to get the votes from church-goers. He is pro-choice so instead of saying abortion is okay, he speaks about teaching kids restraint from their "cavalier" attitudes to get the conservative vote. Why couldn't he answer the proctor of the first debate what spending he would cut? Because he won't cut! Why didn't he answer Joe the Plumber when Joe asked if Obama was going to raise his taxes? Because he won't! Obama is looking for VOTES, so he talks-up minorities, offers tax breaks and increased Medicare and Social Security to baby-boomers, and gives more tax breas, tax credits, and expanded government programs to the lower classes. Why does this country insist on rewarding mediocrity? Of those of us who have a heterosexual marriage, beautiful children, have been WORKING our whole lives, paying our TAXES, and (hopefully) will find success, we are living the American Dream. Yet we constantly get PENALIZED by Democrats for living that dream!! And Michelle Obama has the nerve to say that when Obama was nominated, it was the "first time in her life" she was proud of her country?? Obama surrounded himself with a racist (Rev. Jeremiah Wright) and a terrorist (Bill Ayers) until he wanted to run for office! Once he was in the political spotlight, he disowned his friends! He speaks of the South Side of Chicago as if he were born and raised there; he lived in Hawaii, Indonesia, and New York, then went to Chicago for about 3 years before going to Boston for law school! He returned to Chicago after he formed political aspirations because in South Chicago he saw a lot of people who might vote for a dark-skinned Democrat who would promise them all kinds of free government programs funded by MY taxes!! I'm tired of people talking about Obama as a "new" face in Washington. You have fallen victim to his rhetoric; he's been in politics (in IL and Washington) for 12 years (www.barackobama.com) and he is the slickest politician I've seen since Hillary!

So i think that it is totally bogus that obama wants to raise the taxes on the poor and give the government more spending room. NO! this reminds me of the old days when they taxed the poor and not the rich, UH HELLO the rich are the ones that have money to spare the poor don't. in the united states we have the most poverty because the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. its insane to give the government more money and more freedom to spend, because they don't use our money to help us they use it for retarded things. the government is just a big fat money greedy power hungry monster. there was money taken away from the natural disaster account and put into the war account, so when Katrina happened we didn't have enough money to help them out. Obama needs to think real hard about the people in america that are suffering and not about the ones who aren't. if obama wins the election there is going to be more poverty than ever because the poor and the middle class aren't going to have enough money to pay taxes and the rich well they're rich they got money to spare. Think about it!!!

Bush has been a terrible president, but these two democrats wold be much worse. All the things you dislike about Bush, such as a rampant foreign policy, will be worse under the Democrats. Remember Clinton's meals-on-wheels foreign policy that saw us bombing civilians all over the world and committing troops to decades long occupations? Obama will be worse; he won't get out of Iraq, but he will send US troops and funds (nearly 1 trillion dollars currently proposed) into Africa, probably under UN authority (like under Clinton our military will be wearing blue helmets and taking orders from corrupt UN dictators). Domestically Obama and Clinton will, like Bush, further bloat the federal government with new initiatives that are supposed to help the poor (remember Bush's prescription drugs?) but instead merely rob the people of their property to line corporate interest pockets. So a vote for Clinton or Obama is a vote for Bush's third term.
