well

If you bail out the auto industry you better be ready to bail out the rest of Michigan's businesses that have been hurt by a failing economy. The world's for that matter. For crying out loud, we are in a downward spiraling trend and putting it off will just make it deeper and harder to get out of, robbing peter to pay paul has finally reached its maturity. If we're going to spend money lets spend it on where this is going, not where it has been. We're going to need aid packages for the homeless and jobless, education packages, new industries in the already and continuing strong agribusiness market and other things like energy and health care. NO, no big 3 bailout!

Arrogance above all

I was a consultant for one of the now not so big 3 in the late 90's... remember? SUVs were flying off the lot, they were making then bigger and bigger (think Navigator, Expedition), not a dime in discount off sticker prices. GM moved to bigger and fancy HQ at the RenCen. Didn't give a damn about alternate energy.

When we saw study after study showing them trailing the Japanese and Europeans, and their situation was not sustainable given some reasonable predictable risks like increasing gas prices, the top management refused to believe that.

It really scared me so much I just wanted to get the hell out of Detroit. and I did finally in 2000 and was awfully glad. How the heck could they not see it coming? How much more stupid could they be? Or were they simply counting on a govt bailout?

Sorry, but you should have seen this coming.

THE BIG THREE

the unions are not the problem, The unions have been asking the gov. to put a limit on the foreign cars coming in the USA, but no you all thought they were so big no one could bring them down. The unions are the best thing to the regular people, look back at your life and you will see union. I LOVE THE UNION UAW

Shmunions

Finally somebody has the nerve to say the "Sh" word ...

Brace yourself, for this subject will be bashed in many was, old and new.

I too believe this is the time for the shmunions to admit they are part of the problem and hope they are willing to be part of the solution; they had considerable sway in (over) protecting the interests of few in the detriment of an entire economy, why not use the same power in a benign and constructive way.

If not, I fear no bailout package is big enough for their bottomless drawers and insatiable apetite for giveaways.

Btw, the "shmunion" rhyme reminds me of how Voldermort's name was unspeakable in Harry Potter's movies... people were afraid to mention his name for fear of retribution ...
