Is Obama Planning a Surprise Tax Hike?

Back to blog

Socialist, huh?

Yes, Obama’s nothing but a Socialist. As though "socialist" were a term of condemnation.

He's the new president. How is he going to get the country out of the mess Cheney and Bush have sunk it into? Before Cheney came to power, America was solvent. The two wars they -- well, Cheney and Bush -- invented quickly eroded America's solvency. Now America is I don't know how many trillions in the red. How can Obama remedy the mess without raising taxes? Where can he get the money from? Let the chief crooks of Wall Street return some of the billions they looted from the national treasure. PERMIT Obama to raise taxes on the billionaires of the US. If you show me a billionaire, you show me either a thief or the son of a chief.

As for the second part of James Pethokoukis's post -- I'll respond to it when he de-jargons it, i.e. rewrites it so that it can be understood by a reasonably articulate reader. Would he -- or someone else -- translate what follows into intelligible English:

"While this achieves the same goal of raising the top tax rate, to achieve the permanent middle class tax cut, the 5 pct. surtax will fall on top of the higher income tax rates after the Bush tax cuts expire (39.6% + 5%)."

Muchas gracias....

Patriiot/Marielena

Patriot....chew on this, from today's WSJ-

"Democrats ran on "paygo" in 2006, promising to offset any new spending increases or tax cuts with comparable tax increases or spending cuts. Once in charge on Capitol Hill they quickly made exceptions, waiving paygo no fewer than 12 times to accommodate some $398 billion in new deficit spending -- not that the press corps bothered to notice. That didn't stop Majority Leader Steny Hoyer from announcing in May that "We're absolutely committed to paygo. Speaker [Nancy Pelosi] is committed to paygo. I'm very committed to paygo. Our caucus is committed to paygo."

Still think it's wrong to criticize Obama, who actually campaigned on raising taxes? Read the above quote, and think for a moment about the new spending about to come, when he's coupled together with the Pelosi/Reid cabal.

Marielena-

The top 25% of American earners pay 86% of federal taxes. There are currently 39% of Americans who pay no income taxes, and that number IIRC will be in the mid 40's under Obama. What do you think happens to our republic when more than 50% of voters don't pay any income taxes-are they likely to vote in candidates who will require them to pay taxes?

Nope.

Jesse of PA @ Nov 11, 2008 13:40:38 PM

top5% pay all tax?

Well, I have no actual problem with this since I'm not in that category. However the math doesn't work, and Mr. Obama is a bright man, so I'm not clear on why you'd make such a ridiculous assertion.

Marielena of NY @ Nov 11, 2008 13:09:34 PM

Predictable?

Nothing has happened yet. Hard to characterize anything as being predictable prior to the outcome being finalized.

We are all going to find out who Obama is when he becomes the president in January. We will know what our new tax rate is when we have to pay the bill. If conservatives around the country would practice what they preach, and place their country first, instead of complaining about the policies of an elected official before he is even in office, America would be a better place for all of us.

If you want to complain about actual implemented policy, that debate is worthwhile. To complain based on speculation seems petty and does not bring us any closer to a perfect America. We are all in this together. Obama is the next president. Be a patriot, and at least give him the chance to fix America from day one of his presidency. Once his policies are in place, the debate on how he is performing becomes worthwhile. For now, its sour grapes.

ZOMBIE'S

Your new MARXIST, LENINIST, SOCIALIST, COMMUNIST, DICTATOR WILL TAKE ALL THE REST AWAY NOT JUST TAX YOU TO DEATH. I am so angry with you liberals and so called lib dem’s for believing this Marxist dictator and in fairy tales.

“WHY” would you want the government, to live your life for you? Have you watch Nazi Nancy’s face this past week….she is in ecstasy….she can’t wait to get her hands on more money from all the companies. Problem is they will all leave the country soon…with their money.

All The Joe's and Peggy's & Justin's will be waiting for handouts that will never come and if by some chance they do come, I would at this point have to ponder if the numbers “666” or the tag,” I PRAISE THE ONE THE ONLY OBAMA “ will be tattooed on their useless foreheads …marked on them to receive the hand out’s like food , water, meds & shelter. . . At least Jim Jones’s jerks drank enough to do themselves righteous. Unfortunately all the Kool_Aid drinkers will wait until there Messiah gives them the order to do so.

Envy of the Rich

Wow, there are a lot of people who seem to think that those who have achieved financial prosperity are evil and greedy.

Bottom line, folks, the IRS stats are what show that the top 10% pays 70% of the taxes collected. The bottom 45% pay nothing. How much is enough? How is that fair?

If anyone bothers to read the book, "The Millionaire Next Door," you'll find that most 1st generation self-made millionaires build their wealth over a long period of time. Overnight success usually takes at least 10 years.

I know many small business owners who took little or NO salary during the company start up years to get their company off the ground. This was their sacrifice in addition to long hours and a long term plan. However, their employees got paid FULL salary from day ONE.

Most people aren't entrepreneurs so they never see or hear about this. Contrary to popular opinion, you can't just write off anything as a business expense or you will get audited by the IRS. I'd rather have a root canal.

America was built on entreprenuerial spirit and innovation. With it, everyone has the CHANCE for huge success. But to make that happen, it requires the old fashioned notion of WORK.

We ALL have the chance to make it big here, more so than any country in the world. It's up to us. But we are not entitled to someone else's reward.

The wealthy have a secret formula to success: They spend LESS than they make. And they buy the big ticket items AFTER they can afford to pay for them.

What a novel concept.

It is pretty awesome that James Garfield our 20th President said that hits it on the head about our government.

Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”

James Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, 1877

I escaped Eugene several years ago to freedom and liberty. Like they say, "old hippies never die, they just move to Eugene".....you stick out like a sore thumb.

"Healthcare and education ought to be considered a right". Why? Because YOU are too lazy to pay for your own? You have the right to healthcare, I just don't have to pay for yours. As far as education, I suspect that you are a product of TAXPAYER FUNDED public education...that worked out well for ya eh?

So while you expect everyone else to wipe your ass for you, you take your freeloaded foodstamps over to the local microbrew, and have an organic salad with your Hefiweisen.

Yup, that's productive. How fulfilling.

I expect to begin receiving those shipments from your garden shortly so that I can feed my family without actually, you know, working. While you're at it, throw in a couple of those microbrews since I don't want to have to take time out from my relaxation schedule to go to the store. Sure glad you are there to support me since I'm tired of working.

And be careful who you call a murderer. I have a son in the Marines. I can assure you, he hasn't murdered anyone. You know, It is his duty to protect his country, Constitution, and citizens. You and the rest of Eugene he protects because he HAS too.

Lk...don't know where to start.

You say that trickledown economics doesn't work. Please explain how Reagan's reduction of Carter's 70% tax rates didn't lead to one of the longest economic booms in our history. You are simply repeating a lie, sir. When the rich have more money, they spend it....take the construction sector. If the rich pay more money to the government, then do they have money to afford to buy new homes, and do remodeling? Which employs people that build cabinets, furniture, fixtures, roofing materials, etc etc, throughout our economy. You don't have to be Paul Krugman to realize that.

So to say that trickle down doesnt work is stunning. Another analogy- If you have to pay for $4.00/gallon gas, does that leave you alot of money to buy other consumer items?

(the gas prices being taxes paid to the govt. in this analogy)

You also say that putting money into the hands of the middle class will help consumer spending. Ha. The govt. just handed out money last year to stimulate the economy, but it had little to no effect-which is precisely what Obama's tax cuts will do.

Think about it-is it better to stimulate growth by creating jobs, through lower taxation, or to simply hand the money over to the worker, to be spent on credit card debt?

Is it better to teach a man to fish, or just give him fish?
