Why McCain Goes Easy on Fannie and the CRA

Back to blog

McCain should step aside if he won't address the Fannie/Freddie mess

For the Democrats to argue that all would be well had only been under their always beneficial, perfect future-envisioning regulation been in place is like Dom Deluise claiming that if only we'd followed his diet instead of Rosanne Barr's, we'd all weigh so much less. Garbage!

Conceding this to the Dems is far worse than just losing to Obama. If McCain/Palin are unable to convey the overwhelming magnification of the credit crunch that came from allowing Fannie/Freddie to run on very low capital reserves (not any different than Republican appointed SEC chief Chris Cox's 2004 decision to halve capital reserve requirements on the I-banks), then they should (seriously) step aside in favor of Mitt Romney.

No, Romney wouldn't win, but nor is McCain if he can't explain the facts to the public. At least, however, Obama wouldn't begin his Presidency w/ a public duped as to the major, major role the Dems played in the credit crunch.

Political Will...

I am willing to fight to the death to defend all that is right and good and moral about America. I am willing to go down swinging in a fight were only the prevailing side can claim the right to shape (or reshape) the political and social complexion of this once-great nation. But in the final few moments of this decades long struggle, I made the mistake of peaking up from the trenches look around at the battlefield. To my horror, I see no commanding officers in the fray. There are many who have died in fierce battle. Some were taken out by fragging. But by and large their numbers have thinned by the worst reason possible....LACK OF POLITICAL WILL.

The Left will use every clod of dirt, every broken bottle, every ball bat...ANYTHING to fight with. While I am at impassable odds with their causes, I at least appreciate the fact that their leaders are, now more than at any other time I can recall completely committed to its defense. Which is more than I can say about any of those on the Right.

Among the ranks of leadership on the Right there seems to be some misguided definitions of "fairness" and "bi-partisanship" that seems to necessitate a unilateral disarming of political fire power; to voluntarily ignore or marginalize the things the Right does to preserve the American way of life or that the Left does to undermine or destroy it.

I have reached the end of my reserves of political will. If I and others in this battle are not able to find leaders willing to lead by example, then we are astute enough to realize the battle is already lost. If the Right cannot find the means and the courage to insure that all that is moral and good to prevails, then the political will.

McCain doesn't want lose.

Bringing up this argument would lead to his loss. The Republicans had plenty of opportunity to deal with the housing crisis, when they controlled congress,(and when the alleged acts by democrats would have occurred.)

We've been aware that there was a housing bubble since 2001, yet the only legislation proposed to deal with this came when the democrats took control of congress. Incidentally, many of these bills were filibustered by Republicans who thought the economy was "fundamentally sound". Don't believe me? Check the record:

republican wusses

John McCain will not win if he doesn't start fighting. The problem with republicans is that they have been tarred with the brush of "dirty trick" tactics by the demoCRAPS since Nixon. Now their afraid to do any thing that the liberals could say "see, their up to the old racist, anti gay, anti immigrant, anti whatever tricks again." The republicans of today will not fight for ANYTHING! On the other side the demoCRAPS will fight for everything and they know how to make it look like their the compromisers reaching accross the aisle. The only time demoCRAPS ever reached accross the aisle was to retrieve the knives they stuck in the backs of republicans so they could stick-em again! God help us if Obama and company take over cause the republicans won't! The shame is we have no other dog in this fight to root for.

Immigrant home loans cornerstone of McCain's platform

You can't have mass immigration without a home loan program for immigants, McCain can't be "pro-immigration" & not be "pro-sub-prime loans for immigrants".

You have to eat the bad (debt) that comes with the good(growth) McCain wants to have the good (growth) and ignore the bad (low wages, massive debt).

There is an alternative, Chuck Baldwin.

McCain can't win

McCain can't win at this point. Rant impotently all you want, he's got 26 years in the senate where he supported consistently policies to deregulate the financial industries, and the deregulated trading of mortgage backed collateralized Debt obligations, which were given an overinflated risk assessment, sank this economy.

CRA funds never contributed to the problem in any significant way, it was leveraging that made the problem become a minor several billion loss into a trillion dollar catastrophe. Low income borrowers didn't do this, sophisticated financial players bet the bank, hoping to privatize the winnings but instead they are socializing the losses.

McCain had 26 years in the senate and the experience of being one of the Keating 5, but he didn't prioritize this issue, since his heart was in Iraq. He's not in any position to blame either Obama or the Democratic minority at the time the Hagel bill died. Blame him for not manning up to his responsibility, not for failing to point fingers at those lesser responsible.

I used to think the man had honor, but even that he seems to have abandoned in his desperate attempt to win the presidency. It's kind of sad.

Where's the Maverick?

What a shame. McCain turns coward in America's time of need.

I am so incensed at this man. I wasn't sure I would vote for him at first, then he lured me in with his "Maverick" speech.

What a CROCK. I cannot believe he sabotaged his own campaign with a vote to sell out America and on top of that he hasn't even explained why.

I suppose I should be grateful...it made me look into other options. I am now voting for the Libertarian candiddate, Bob Barr, whom I have never heard of.

I know it will be a 'vote' for Obama by default but I cannot in good conscience vote for McCain now.

things to come

Well my fellow Americans it is time for us to accept the fact that Obama will probably win this and America as we knew it will be no more. Plan your escape now Socialism will be the way of life and we are fools for allowing Mccain to win the nomination as he just does not have the stamina or the values needed to run this once great nation. He has been wrong about so many things immigration, campaign finance, and what has caused the mess in America right now if he does not have the stones to speak up and call out the dems on this issue we are screwed. I love my country but have very little faith that she can withstand the effects of a Mccain presidency and absolutely no faith that we will survive an Obama presidency within two years there will be a border fence and troops on the border but it will not be our fence or our troops.Americans are too damn interested in what reality tv show is running than who is running our government.

The McCain Campaign Death Wish!

Sad to say, Obama's most recent observations about the McCain campaign are starting to ring truer...are they out of touch with the substance of the country's problems? lost the substance of their message of reform? resorting to impertinent attacks because they are desperate? Hmmmm!

The McCain campaign is acting like it is completely bereft of any intellectual coherance at all at this point. Pulling out of Michigan? You have to be kidding....get Palin and Romney in there and fight like you intend to win it..even if you know you won't...what, the campaign is short on funds? The psychological impact of pulling out is worse than competing to the end.....

On the matter of Obama, the Democrats and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac...what, does McCain have his head completely in the sand? How does a freshman senator become the second biggest beneficiary of contributions from those quasi government organizations? Why do those organizations have any authority to make campaign contributions to any politician? Acorn? Ditto..and on and on!

The Wall Street crisis...attributable to deregulation? greed? Give me a break...sure, Gramm's initiative to modify the 1933 Securities Act made regulation over the country's finacial, insurance and banking industries immensely more complex..indeed, virtually impossible...but, that would in and of itself not led to the finacial melt down we are now experiencing. It is the mortgage crisis spurred by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac! Those programs had erstwhile noble objectives under Clinton...but the politicalization of those programs to serve financially irresponsible public policy objectives....i mean you'd think that the democrats would have been at the forefront of monitoring those entities to make sure they would continue to promote access to mortgage financing for lower income families....instead of the mess that exists now...and taken steps immediately to ensure those entities responded appropriately when the economic growth projections of the 90's were clearly not going to be achieved after 9/11!!!

The problem with two mavericks who's message is they are going to shake up Washington is where are they going to start? What are their priorities? Which entities, organizations and entities will be targeted? What are the results going to be? Tell me! I'd like to know!

Why can't McCain's campaign articulate its health care program? At this point, it comes across as an incoherant jumble of tax incentives and program cuts! But it is much more than that and makes a lot more sense than the alternatives...especially if children will receive basic coverage under state programs (supported with fed dollars), and the tax deduction/benefit is scaled according to income and keyed to the number of dependants being covered; without altering the deductions for medical out of pockets..i.e. universal access to private health care coverage.

The campaign has a death wish; every day that passes, they are losing ground!
