With Polls Close, Obama Blinks on Taxes

Back to blog

Fiscal responsibility? Don't choose Obama. He has admitted that he isn't worried about an initial expansion in the federal debt (he thinks that he can shrink it in the long term). But with his grocery list of proposed programs, he will spend a lot more than he brings in. He's asking you to invest in the government which is a proven failing enterprise. They are inept at controlling their costs, why does Obama think it will be any different under him? Government is too big and inefficient as it is, but Barack Obama will end up just adding to the problem

say ahhhhhhhhhhhh to taxes

Everyone complains about increased taxes (including me). However, in this country, we are in dire straits. We have unparalleled debt levels. We have no plans or funds for infrastructure improvement. It doesn't matter what each candidate is proposing. They don't begin to recommend a remedy for paying down debt in the same breath. Why, because we don't want to hear what has to be done. We can no longer grow out of debt. The US is too mature an economy for fast growth.

The solution: a complete revamping of taxes. Closing of every loophole (why the hell can we deduct interest payments on mortgages)? Severe reduction of every budgetary expenditure - in other words, negative growth in government.

Will this ever happen? Are you kidding. Of course not. Our present society and system of government would never allow this.

Say What?

"Congress, not Obama or McCain will determine tax law. One of the two of them will merely sign or veto."

I see, so then by that reasoning they really aren't Bush's irresponsible tax cuts as the liberal media have been telling us these last 8 years, they're really Congress' irresponsible tax cuts.

Is that about right?

Revenues

No where do you say that tax cuts increase gov't revenues. Don't you remember JFK? He was the last democrat who was willing to prove it. Since him the democrats and the media have said nothing but more taxes, more taxes, and then even more taxes.

Are flip flops sold out at Obama Campaign headquarters?

Here's the list: Obama flip flopped on FISA (wiretapping bill and the one that was a game changer in terms of my vote going to the democrats); he now says he "talk with the generals" about Iraq instead of a plan to withdraw; he's now says "yes" to oil drilling; he now switches his tax plan; he first said consult the UN regarding the Russia/Georgia conflict, then he went toward McCain's position. That doesn't even get into his vague comments about abortion and the death penalty. He's just all over the map. You can' figure out what he stands for. If he had a record we could count on, we could say, "well, he'll just do this or that when in office." But, he has no great political record. Let's face it. He's not ready. The Democrats again pick a loser. They had a "statesperson" in Hillary but said, "let's go for dazzling."

McCain 08/PUMA Democrat

You'd Blink Too!

If your eyes were full of tears while paying taxes.

Flat Tax

I can not understand why no one talks about a flat tax system. If everyone (that goes for guest workers, nonresident aliens too) pays 15% on all their income we could would finally have a system that is simple and fair to everyone. Imagine how easy all the returns would be to process through the IRS! No more deductions, loopholes, complicated shelters or whatever! Just 15% of personal and business net income.

Regarding Obama and McCain. One is an empty shell and arrogant and the other is grouchy and experienced. I choose grouchy and experienced.

Toonces of TX @ Aug 15, 2008 01:02:23 AM

Actually Congress, the President, the IRS, whoever, doesn't need to do anything.

Let the Bush tax cuts expire and EVERYONE'S taxes increase (hard to believe, I know, but those Bush tax cuts benefited everyone who pays taxes which is pretty much anyone who produces an income)

Our Adorable Little Kingdom in Washington, DC

Forget the two affable, likeable ONLY candidates runnng for President-election after election merely supplies us with party puppets opposing each other and we are left to choose a side. Why not take a real good look at Congress-that gaggle of silver haired wizards out for themselves, not us. Why do they have jobs for life, full pensions forever, unlimited healthcare coverage for all family members, $25,000 annual salary increases voted for by themselves at midnight. Will the real light of day ever shine on these grasping, corrupt, self-important creatures. What are their spectacular credentials-that they can be indicted but still keep their jobs? Can't happen in the private sector yet. When Congress reduces corporate taxes, it ensures them the big, fat corporate support/vote next time around the merry-go-round. Corporations are mini versions of the Kingdom of Congress-they do what's best for their executives/members first, employees/citizens always figure into the equation last, if at all. Nothing's going to change, just paste a new face on the puppet and hope for the best. Of course, when elected, one of them will surely enforce a moratorium on earmarks. Hah! Of course, when elected, one of them will surely curb outrageous spending. Hah! Of course one of them, when elected, will surely consider the needs of the people. Hah! Since these princes and princesses in the Adorable Little Kingdom only work about one third of a year-must have their 5 week vacations, spring and summer and winter breaks and shorter than ever in-sessions-they have just enough time to write annual Christmas Lists...and they always get exactly what they want... AND WE PAY AND PAY AND PAY for all of it. Even the Supreme Court said term limits are against the law of the land. There is no saviour in this dirty little game... shouldn't we realize by now that all we can do, all we are good for, is to subsidize the Little Kingdom in DC. Watch C-SPAN...and see the dancing oligarchs amuse themselves at our expense. Deja vu all over again. We don't have a peasant's chance in hell for change. Come November, we shall elect an ambitious King who wants to be The King of the Adorable Little Kingdom in Washington, DC. That's all, folks.
