A McCain-Huckabee Ticket? The Right Reacts

Huckabee Oversight

First of all, I will have to say I am afraid neither Romney nor Huckabee would be a wise choice for VP. Either one will split the party one way or the other. Then, I will have to state up front that I wish this wasn't the case, because I feel Romney would be an outstanding choice because of his vast knowledge of international business and the economy, both from a governmental position and the private sector.

Having said this, I would like to point out an incident that happened during the debates that for some reason or another didn't receive the attention it deserved. The topic was about President Bush's tax rebate. When Huckabee was asked his opinion, he said he wasn't solidly behind it, because he thought the money could be used more wisely in building roads. The moderater than asked Romney his opinion. He addressed Huckabee in a very friendly manner and told him that it would be a great idea to use money reserves for highways sometime in the future, but to use the money for that now would not immediately stimulate the economy which is needed now. He further pointed out that to get funds for building highways would take months and even years because of the bids that would be required, the hiring of construction companies, all of the red tape to get a monumental task like this in motion, etc. The tax rebates would help the economy immediately as pointed out above. These two extemporaneous remarks alone immediately showed how little Huckabee understood the economy and how vastly knowledgeable Romney is on the economy.

One other reason I would chose Romney over Huckabee is Romney has not accepted one cent for his service to turning the Olympics around or as Governor of Massachusetts, and he reportedly would not have accepted a salary as President. On the other hand, Huckabee has inappropriately accepted numerous gifts and fees in office--the amount is somewhat staggering. Why has Romney been demonized and Huckabee placed on a pedastel?

There are others who would make excellent vice presidential picks.

Mike Huckabee...And oh so many psuedonyms....Gosh y'all are brilliant, to bad all your smarts weren't enough to get your guy in...nor will he be VP, unfortunately Nevada, and Utah are not enough to seal the deal.

caricature over policy's

if we can learn anything from this years democratic elections, i has to be that people vote for caricature over policy's. (that is why Obama won, even tho his policy's are almost a copy of Hilary's)

that is why i would love to see huckabee on the ticket, i may disagree with some of his pilecys, but if you dont want obama in the white house, we need somone who is likable and charismatic, and that is definatly mike!

go mike!

McHuck works....

This would be the ONLY workable ticket for the Republican Party this year. Huckabee, like him or not relates to people... The people that bad-mouth him now are generally the same people who bad-mouthed him before. They are also largely the same people who were drinking the "the economy is sound" kool-aid back when Huckabee, in one of the debates (New Hampshire, IIRC) said "you guys who are all saying 'things aren't bad need to get out and talk to the people I have been talking to'. He was right then and he is right now.

Remember that Ronald Reagan didn't become President because he had the backing of the country club set, he won because he looked average people in the eye and asked them "are you better off than you were four years ago?"

The fact is that in 2008 people are NOT better off than they were four years ago, and the only - ONLY - for the GOP to win is to convince them that they appreciate this and know how to fix it. And the ONLY one who can pull that off is Mike Huckabee.

I think it's a biased article

1. First, let me say this unnamed source or " a top fundraiser for McCain" seems a bit fishy to me. I think we need to hear from someone with more credibility.

2. Most of the comments I read on this message the board were against the idea NOT for it.

3. How does Huckabee help the ticket? If anything he would hurt the ticket because social conservatives hate Huckabee. I can see Limbaugh bad mouthing that ticket all the way to the General Election.

4. Huckabee was the first to complain about the Washington Insiders. McCain is a Washington Insider, who happens to be soft on immigration (just like Huckabee).

McCain is no longer seen as a Maverick. Anyone nicknamed McBush is not a maverick.

5.Religious right leaders made it clear they will not vote for McCain. Huckabee is not going to change their minds. Hell, even Huckabee struggled to get the religious right leaders to endorse him.

A McCain/Huckabee ticket has absolutely no chance at winning.

Huckabeen/Copeland

trailman101 of FL:

Excellent post! I agree--the liberal press will make a HUGE issue of Huckabeen's friendship with Copeland AND also the many skeletons in his closet.

The Religious Vote

Bob O has a point. Please explain to me where the Christian vote will go if Huckabee isn't on the ticket? To Obama? Will they stay home and surrender ground to the Godless Humanists?

On the other hand, if Huck is on the ticket, won't the media make the same connection between Huckabee/Copeland that they are making between Obama/Wright? Both have chosen to affiliate themselves CLOSELY with religious leaders that are suspect, corrupt, and certainly un-Christian. How will that appeal to true religious voters? Both Obama and Huckabee have made the same kind of choices on this issue. Doesn't this cast doubt on the judgement and religious motivations of both men? Seems like this would be a problem for people that are sincerely religious.

trailman101 of FL @ May 14, 2008 20:25:30 PM

Get a balanced ticket.

What does Huckabee offer McCain in the general? His appeal to the common man right? McCain already has that, especially when he's up against Obama. McCain's strengths, his maverick persona, moderate politics, war hero history, and "straight-talk express" are all "common man" themes. They appeal to the broad spectrum of middle america where Obama is weak. I'm afraid Huckabee doesn't add much to that. McCain already has those votes.

And the moral social conservatives? McCain/Jindal, McCain/Rice, McCain/Pawlenty, even McCain/Romney will all deliver those votes too. The alternative is Obama and you know where that will lead in the culture war and the stand for morality. If you stay home during the general, you will give Obama the lives of more unborn children. If you're holding out for Huck 2012, is it worth the lives of the unborn? Even McCain/Romney will not backtrack on morality. They would press forward with the right judges. They will not surrender on marriage. Remember, the Mormon vote has been solidly behind the pro-life and traditional marriage causes for decades. Stop scorning them. The majority of Mormons are allies and have proven themselves in the most crucial battles for conservative values.

If this is truly about politics and the conservative cause in November, let McCain choose someone that will truly bring us the strength we need. Huckabee doesn't add enough to the ticket. In fact, for the many reasons mentioned in some of the posts above, he may detract. Too much is at stake.

Huckabee, My Choice

I'm hard core conservative / activist. Huckabee was my choice for president. Not just because of life and family add also fair tax, Reagan defense spending and more. He also had the most executive governing experience and the best rhetorical abilities and a refreshing optimism and authenticity.
