Shell Sees Three Hard Truths for the Future

Back to blog

Desire for heightened energy security based on projections & fears of the future drive the energy sector. This also has an impact on the increased energy usage of all economies. The combined effect of this is to spur energy demands beyond realistic requirements thereby initiating a chain of events that spins every claculations out of control. There is a definitve need to redefine the actual usage on a per capita basis and work vigorously to keep demands at sustainable levels. Its not India and China alone that are the major drivers, energy demands have increased exponentially from all quarters of the world.

It would only be prudent for oil companies to develop more efficient ways of tapping this resource as failure to do this today is likely to have a siginificant impact on their own existence in the not so distant future.

Energy Use

A tremendous amount of discussion centers on "how much energy we have/can get. Not a large amount of thought seems to be directed at "How do we use the energy supplies we already have."

I believe that our salvation lies in the greater us of nuclear (and other forms of electrical generation) and its use to power rail service and high speed-short haul passenger service and long line freight service.

In this way we can reduce airline delays, heavy hi way freight and redeploy the "saved" petroleum products to a better use. In this way we can become "energy dependent" through nuclear power. This will require the slaying of a number of "Sacred Cows". I suspect there may not be sufficient intestinal fortitude for the politicians to accomplich this essential task.

The thing to remember is that this would not be a disaster but an Industrial Revolution and an economic boom. With the added benefit of a cleaner environment.

This is a very short version of a complicated subject but is directed at energy utilization rather than development of massive amounts of additional energy supply.
