So, am I to understand then that in addition to the$5-$10,000 in savings, I need to have another $5-$10,000 in an emergency fund? Seriously?

No. #1 is about general baby-related expenses, like clothes, furniture, etc. #5 is about an emergency fund, i.e. a parent losing a job, getting sick, etc.

At the risk of sounding like ye olde curmudgeon

Babies do not care if they have new or designer anything, as long as baby gear meets current safety standards.

Also, while it would be great to have a handy sum saved, child care and insurance will come out of future compensation, and don't need to be purchased up front. Couldn't the same effect be achieved by getting and staying out of credit card debt, keeping a car a few extra years instead of taking on a new note, etc.?
