Eat Smart Age Smart but not at $6.56

I also heard from a reader telling me that I was wrong and that it is cheaper to eat out, because he can get an order of chicken, fish, vegetables, soup, beans, salad, plus a drink and dessert for only $6.56, plus tip.

Yes, you can eat that cheap, but WHAT are you eating? In other words what is the quality of the ingredients in your meal?

I mean if a restaurant is will to sell all that food for $6.56 and make a profit ... you have to ask yourself how much is it costing them to buy the food in the first place and how much filler is in that food to still make it worth their while at only $6.56.

I just tackled the subject this week:

Healthy Eating at Home

When you make your food at home, you know what went in to it. Eating out might be cheaper sometimes, but the iceberg salad hardly counts for vegetable.

You can make healthy dinners at home in 20 or 30 minutes. I do it every night. There are some tips on my blog to help you out. You can find the articles in diet and health, and there is a recipe category too. I hope it's ok to post the urls - but you did ask for them... http://CommonSenseLiving.com

Oh, I also have a good tip for a 3 dinner plan for a busy week here - http://www.squidoo.com/guidelines-for-healthy-eating

Amy, I love roasted vegetables. Yum.

A New Way To Save On Grocery Shopping

I am an inventor. Last Fall I received US Patent # 7,232,168 for "The Baggy Buddy Grocery Shopping Bags Easy Carry Handle". It's a device I designed to simplify carrying, transport and management of multiple plastic shopping bags full of groceries. They are very efficient at what I designed them to do. All the grocery shopping bags are easy to carry with one handle. They stay together in the car, and they don't spill.

Recently, some of my customers have been reporting a new benefit; my Baggy Buddy's have made it so much easier for them to manage greater numbers of grocery bags, they have been purchasing more groceries per trip and making fewer trips to the supermarket. One email even did the math. With a 9 mile round trip to the supermarket, in an 18 mpg car, she saves over $50.00 a year by cutting out only 2 trips a month.

Think what she could save if she cut out one trip a week. The average American makes 2.5 trips to the supermarket a week.

Saving is easy with a roadmap

The USDA estimates that the average family throws out between 25 and 50% of the food that they buy.

Save that amount by effectively storing and repurposing (giving away the leftovers or creating another dish to be eaten later) the food you cook.

Join or create your own food club. Buy in bulk and share the cost with your neighbors, friends, and family. Do the same when you cook. This works great when you bake cookies, cakes, or candies.

Barter with those you trust. Trade cookies for faitas or casserole for chicken. Anything will work as long as you can agree and quality is maintained.

These are the type of the ideas that are in "Buckets of Food for Pennies" , an eBook billed as "The food budget owner's manual".

There's a book, "City Chic: An Urban Girl's Guide to Livin' Large on Less", that is chock full of suggestions on how to save money in the city and includes a chapter on how to save money in the pantry. One of the suggestions is using cheaper herbs that are similar to the more expensive ones in recipes.

money saving tips--food

Thanks for linking to my blog, Cooking with Amy! Here are my top tips when it comes to saving money on food:

1. Buy unprocessed, bulk foods whenever possible. Processed food is expensive and not always healthy.

2. Cook one day a week. I used to cook on Sunday. I'd make several dishes like lasagna, chili and roast chicken that I could eat all week long. Even rice can be cooked and frozen, then microwaved in a jiffy.

3. Buy fresh produce that is in season. Strawberries are expensive (and don't taste very good) in December. They are cheap in May or June.

4. Roast vegetables in the oven. A batch of roasted peppers, asparagus, onions, carrots (or almost anything you like) is very versatile. Stored in the refrigerator, they can be used in salads, sandwiches, side dishes, on top of couscous, polenta or pasta for quick and tasty meals.
