Geography
Hot summers and mild winters are common in this city built along the Trinity River in north-central Texas.
Cultural Attractions
Summer musicals, a symphony and opera, and the Museum of Art round out the Dallas arts scene, but don't miss the Sixth Floor Museum in the old Texas School Book Depository building, which marks the spot where Lee Harvey Oswald fired his infamous shots.
Recreation
All the major professional sports teams in Texas have homes in or near Dallas, including the Cowboys, the Rangers, the Mavericks, and the Stars. Those looking for less sedentary activities can visit one of the city's more than 400 parks for swimming, boating, biking, golf, and tennis.
Historical
The Dallas area was settled in the 1840s, and King Cotton spurred its growth. The discovery of the East Texas oil field in the 1930s made Dallas a principal player in the petroleum business.
Economy
As a major part of the Silicon Prairie, the Dallas area has many high-tech employers, including Texas Instruments, along with other major corporations, such as Exxon Mobil.
