Geography
The city sits on both banks of the Kansas River, in the northeastern corner of the state.
Cultural Attractions
The Topeka Performing Arts Center provides a venue for dance, musical, and theatrical performances. Each February, Topeka plays host to the Kansas Silent Film Festival, complete with live musical accompaniment.
Recreation
Numerous lakes in the area, including nearby Lake Shawnee, provide opportunities for sailing, boating, fishing, and camping.
Historical
Topeka's Monroe School was the all-black school cited in the landmark Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education. The court decision ended legal segregation in public schools.
Economy
The State of Kansas is the city's largest employer. Manufacturing and the retail trade also contribute to the local economy.
