In 1842, town locals, angry that President Martin Van Buren had vetoed a bill to improve U.S. Route 40, conspired to have him thrown from his carriage into the mud as he traveled the road on a re-election campaign. The tree whose roots caused the president’s fall was renamed the Van Buren Elm.
