Climate
The city experiences a dry, temperate climate.
Geography
Durango is in the southwest corner of Colorado, in the Animas River Valley and surrounded by the two million acres of the San Juan National Forest.
Cultural Attractions
The city is home to the Mesa Verde National Park, where Ancestral Puebloeans lived from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. The park has kept over 4,000 archaelogical sites intact, including 600 cliff dwellings.
Recreation
The Durango & Silverado Narrow Gauge Railroad, continuously run since its completion, offers scenic train rides through the canyons of the San Juan National Forest, the same route traveled by miners, cowboys, and settlers of the Old West.
Fun Fact
Ancient volcanic activity in the nearby San Juan Mountains has caused a high concentration of hot springs in the area.
