Geography
The city is located in the desert landscape of the Southwest, surrounded by the saguaro cactus and the community favorite Tempe Town Lake on the Salt River.

Historical
Arizona State University was founded in 1885 as a site for the Territorial Normal School, which trained teachers for Arizona's schools; it was not until 1958 that it became a university.
