10 Not So 'Recession-Proof' Industries
With everything from job security to stock portfolios seeming like a crapshoot these days, people don't want to push their luck and roll the dice in a casino, too. Atlantic City casinos reported that revenues fell almost 20 percent this March from a year before, the largest year-on-year decline in the resort's 31-year history. And on the Las Vegas strip, February revenues from table games plunged more than 35 percent from a year earlier. The gambling city's woes left one recent visitor, a columnist for Australia's Herald Sun, to write, "What happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas. Rather, it's a mirror for what's going on in the rest of the country." And the reflection isn't pretty.
