Lincoln is on a rolling prairie, in the valley of Salt Creek.
Historical
Lincoln became the state’s capital on March 1, 1867, the same day Nebraska became a state. The city was renamed from Lancaster to honor the president, who had been assassinated two years earlier. The renaming was highly controversial--many of the state’s constituents were supporters of the Confederacy.
Recreation
The city offers fishing at state recreation areas and golf at a number of courses. The Lincoln Saltdogs play baseball at Haymarket Park.
